After hearing from Papyrus what happened last time, Sans gathers up the energy for one last try. He asked him about whether or not he had a choice a long long time ago , and Gaster didn't answer. Now here we are!
A far cry from how debates with Sans used to go . I wonder if Gaster's going to make a decision soon.

you're wrong sans... he's doing this because he far to much like the both of you to let someone he loves like you love pap... someone who is just like pap destroy himself the way killing would pap... that's funny isn't it? he's doing this becuse he can't think of anything else... he can't and that' terrifying. cause he's also running out of time.

he's not wrong. gaster is deluded. he thinks there's no other option. he's wrong, there are other ways, it's just that neither he nor asgore have the strength of character to do them.
asgore could have left with one soul, collected 6 souls from a hospital (the humans have no use for them, they died), then come back and freed everyone. quick, easy, painless. he could have allowed the humans to live with the monsters until they died naturally (monsters live far longer than humans, gaster, toriel, asgore and gerson are over a thousand years old by this time), then collected the souls of willing participants and used them. there are always other options. that's one of the messages of undertale, you don't get to say you don't have a choice, because you do.
even if one of those choices is simply to not play.

I'm with Gaster on this one. Sans and Papyrus are making choices in spite of being physically harmed for it. However, Gaster's punishment for making choices is an emotional one. If he doesn't do this, his friend and king will reluctantly become a genocidal terror for what he believes is the good of his people, or monsters will just stay trapped underground. Gaster's experiments are the only other option. If he doesn't go through with them, he'll bear the burden of whatever other option happens. I don't think the experiments were the right choice, but Gaster isn't weak for choosing them. If anything, he's strong.

*Gaster is seen walking by a beamed, empty looking cell but then a fire erupts inside it, scaring him and causing him to react in using his Gaster Blaster against the fire, which put it out and causing him to open the door, run in and see if anyone was hurt bc it's me that was inside that cell which, I laugh at him once I'm on the other side of the beams and the door is closed* You can't handle me. I'm more powerful than you think, Wing Dings Gaster. *a Gaster Blaster is seen above his head, directed at him* "NO WAIT!! Don't hit me yet. Just hear what I got to say, Sky. I was literally told, by Asgore himself, to trap you here and never feed you bu-" But you went behind his back and fed me bc you CARE for people like me. I know. You told me this a thousand times now. He went behind MY back and said I was a dangerous creature meant to be locked up and never remembered. I had A FAMILY!! He knew I had one and ripped me from it after I-*I bite my lip bc the end of this sentence ends with "killed his son by accident"* "He holds a grudge against you, Sky. He wishes that his son was back with him." HIS SON IS ALIVE!!! If only he knew how hard it is to keep the truth inside. If only he knew that his son IS Flowey the Flower. "W-what?" Yes. That's right. I have kept a secret from the all mighty king of the Underground. He kept one from me and I kept one from him. *the Gaster Blaster disappears and I open the door then Gaster grabs my ear* Gaster. Gaster. My ear. Ow ow ow. *Gaster starts to playfully tug on my ear, causing me to yelp with each tug* Ow ow ow ow. *then Gaster throws me into my living space* "Once Asgore comes down to see the great Sky Flanders hurt by just a tug on his ear and to hear from him the truth of his son, I'll finally get what I want out of him." *Gaster goes on into his work area, bambling about what he will get and calling Asgore down to the lab to hear from me about his son* So...Sans right? *Sans says nothing* Sans? I know your awake. *again nothing* Fine. I'll stay here, quiet and alone. *Asgore comes down with Flowey in his hands and I see who the flower is and I jump back into a corner farthest away from the beams as possible* "'Is this my son, Sky?'" *I nod in fear* "'Are you lying?'" *I shake my head no* "'SO THE RUMORS ARE TRUE!!'" *Asgore jumps around with a happy expression as Flowey looks like he is gonna barf* ""L-let me down bk into my p-patch, father."" "'Okay, son.'" *Asgore leaves with a final word to Gaster alone*

I think that's the first time a comic has ever jump scared me, wow...
And honestly, I just want to copy-paste that entire lecture on choices and keep it on the back burner for every person I meet who thinks they "don't have a choice" and uses that as an excuse to do and say horrible things. Because Sans is right. And it's truly ironic that Gaster has been telling himself all this time "I need to be strong enough to do this" only for Sans to come right out and call him WEAK for every agonizing step he has taken down this path.
