Cellos are sooo much angsty! It's all in the tone man. all in the tone.
Violins are a higher pitch, they do sound sad but they are more urgent and moody in thier sadder songs. Cellos are darker because of their lower tone and have more of a brooding angst to them. Violins = happy angst Cellos = Sad angst.

You normally hear violins at high pitches, but when we play our low pitches it's more startling coming from a bright instrument and thus the effect is magnified. We're all used to low pitches from cellos so cello-angst isn't as noticable.

Ah but this is a Vice Verca scenerio my friend! When we hear low violins we also hear high cellos, when a cello is played in thumb position correctly and by someone who is very talented it can be extreamly impressive and very beautiful. And I do agree, violins when played well on the lowest of strings all angsty-like are very pretty.
