Description This is a set that I have had done for a while, just didn't have time to post them till now.

It is a Tamiya 1/100 Me 262 "Schalbe" and Me 163 "Komet". Both hand painted with Testor paint. The assembly was pretty simple, and the result was excellent, especially with the Komet.

Thne Me 163 was based in the Western Front, ready to shoot down allied bombers.

Looks like they're hunting for Allies or Soviets... xD

The Me 262's squadron was stationed on the Eastern front, I don't know about the Me 163 though.

At their size they would be lucky to take down a spider.

Great planes...

Thanks, my favorite of the two (at least on Il-2) is the Me 262, because I can land it. The Komet is very hard to put down.

Well its easy to put down...the hard thing is to put it down in one piece

Roger, I'll do that.
My parents are thinking about a airbrush! I am so happy.

Funky colour.

I painted it this color because I have seen several pics with it the red, and thought it looked sweet. Rather like Jasta 11 "the flying circus".

I heard this was a plane of Wolfgang Spate, and was painted by ground crew or factory, to resemble Richthofen's plane. He went furious after seeing that (red is one of the easiest colours to spot) and ordered to re-paint it.

focallength [2007-12-11 02:27:34 +0000 UTC]

Nicely done. The 262 was a great design hampered by primitive engines and bad decisions. The 163 was as deadly to the pilot as to the bomber crews. The fuel was extremely volatile and on more than one occasion, the plane just exploded on the ground with the predicable results.

Zepherus In reply to focallength [2007-12-11 03:09:28 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! The 262 was put into service so late mainly because of Hitler's bad choices. The engines were primative but effective. (and temperamental)

The Komet was just a quick attempt to cure the bomber problem. It did not quite work our.

focallength In reply to Zepherus [2007-12-11 04:41:38 +0000 UTC]

The engines on the 262 were only good for about 25 hours before they needed to be overhauled due to a lack of high temperature metals. they have two at the museum I used to volunteer at. One was complete and the other was a cut away and if you spun the turbines they still moved smoothly and took a minute or two to stop. Very well balanced machinery.

All your early swept wing jets were based on the plans and data captured after the war.

Zepherus In reply to focallength [2007-12-12 03:06:36 +0000 UTC]

Yep, so in a way the modern jet fighter is based on German design.

focallength In reply to Zepherus [2007-12-12 04:15:58 +0000 UTC]

Basically. The work done on swept wings was crucial to jet development.

Without those wings they would have trouble going supersonic.

I've seen footage of the Komet's take-off. That is scary & I bet the landing is even worse. At least the 262 has landing gear but those old jet engines were some temperamental critters. That is some nice work on the paint

Zepherus In reply to ww2warbird [2007-12-11 03:12:50 +0000 UTC]

Is there footage of it taking off on YouTube?

On Il-2 the Me 262 is a pain to take off, bump up the trottle too quick the engines blow.

Thanks, I worked hard on them.

ww2warbird In reply to Zepherus [2007-12-11 15:56:41 +0000 UTC]

I don't know, haven't looked into Youtube footage. I remember the first time I slammed the throttle forward on the 262 on IL2. I cooked off both engines so fast. Then the lightbulb went on: these are WW2 jet engines, you have to be gentle with them.
