Description On one hand, I agree that the concept of racial/sexuality/nationality/etc pride to be damn silly. Like many others, I think that it's pointless to be proud of something you were born with or a place you were born in. You had no choice to be born black, white, gay, straight, American, or European, so why act like it's some great achievement?

However, I also don't think people should be ashamed of what they were born with. I've heard that the point of gay pride is that despite the rampant hate and homophobia that still exists today, LGBT people want to express that they're not ashamed of what they are. That is a good thing. Yet, some of them can give off a feeling of unwarranted self-importance. That's counter to their message.

Don't be ashamed of who or what you are, but don't act like it's an achievement. Find balance and be happy with yourself.

Honestly, if a person isn't narcissistic about it. I don't see why the can't be proud of any of the things, you mentioned in the stamp. I find it kinda pointless too though, don't get me wrong.Ā

Pride in the context of your using, simply does mean to not be ashamed.

Lgbt pride =/= lgbt superiority.

This could definitely apply to those who think that they are superior to others, especially cough cough, some arrogant Americans. As someone from Asia I'm tired of bullshit saying that people from the USA get to always have things their way just because they tend to rule in a certain industry, and don't even credit the other countries that help them, despite the amounts of help America gets from global friendships. What's worse is the fact that they claim that the rest of the world is just a shithole, even when the USA itself is extremely corrupt. Regardless, no one is superior to each other in terms of everything and that's something no one should be proud of. As long as people don't boast the world could acually be better.

I honestly think when people say they're "proud" of being something like this, what they really mean is "happy". People really need to go to Dictionary.com and learn the differences so that they can use terminology correctly and not sound silly. X3

I've always loved the fact that I was half African American and half Caucasian, but I don't know if I've ever been proud of it. I've been proud of my family, but that's just because they are good people. But I do agree with you, though the hardest part about this message is that all people hear from it is "don't be proud of your race/sexuality/nationality" They don't hear why and what the alternative is. I've actually seen this before (on tumblr, I believe) and many people commented and said, "YOU'RE THE RACIST ONE" and even one person said "I CAN LOVE MY BLACK SKIN YOU RACIST IDIOT HOW DARE YOU SAY I CAN'T LOVE MYSELF"

So it's a good message, but a hard one to deliver.

pride, is one of the seven deadly sins. However, I think there should be a nice balance with being proud of who you are, and being happy. I am Proud to be german, but I dodn't think they are better then any one else. I think alot of proud people tend to be REALLY extream. To the point were its scary. -shudder-

i meen, alot of people are proud for who they are because may be what people have done in the past. Like, all the people who are openly gay, thats hard to do in alot of places. But I think if a person can be openly gay, they should at least have SOME pride right?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

ZeroGravityCroquet In reply to Angry-Moth-Noises [2012-02-27 18:00:05 +0000 UTC]

I don't necessarily think it should be "proud" about being something as much as it should be proud about not being afraid. Like I said, I find it very silly to act like being born a certain way is an achievement, but not being scared or ashamed about it is, in a way, some kind of achievement. So I guess what I'm saying here is that the pride and the self-satisfaction should not be misdirected.

To me, it just seems like pride in being born a certain way has a tendency to move from pride to supremacy.

okay, but alot of people are proud, in a non acheivment way. Because people can be proud of who they are. and race or whatever is a key fact of that.

Because telling people to be happy with themselves sucks?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

ViceralKismet In reply to ZeroGravityCroquet [2012-01-15 06:44:11 +0000 UTC]

The point of pride in yourself if because things are nowhere equal, and those minorities are denigrated and marginalized. Many people have to hide who they are most of the time, which makes people who are out and proud and positive important for the rest who can't.

If we were all on an equal playing field I might agree with you. But I don't know how I'd measure 'unwarranted self-importance'. Can you name a few examples you've come across?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

ZeroGravityCroquet In reply to ViceralKismet [2012-01-15 20:38:43 +0000 UTC]

I'd measure unwarranted self-importance as people taking pride beyond pride and turning it into superiority. Like heterophobes, black supremacists, and the like. They're "proud" of what they are and they use that pride to degrade others. I may have never seen one myself, but it would be naive to deny their existence just because I've never met one personally. That would be like denying sexism because I've never personally met a misogynist/misandrist.

Being "out and proud and positive" is a good thing, but I feel like "pride" just sends the wrong message. Being "out and happy" would send both the message of not hiding who they are, and not being unnecessarily proud of something they can't control.

I think people should have a little pride in who they are, even if it isn't there choice, but of course they should parade it around as if it were anything they earned, like a trophy of sorts.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

ZeroGravityCroquet In reply to Ionosphere-Negate [2012-01-15 06:29:46 +0000 UTC]

I feel like the idea behind this kind of pride can sometimes lead to misguided views. Being happy with oneself doesn't have to mean being proud.
