I had this exact argument with someone a few days ago. They were acting like the only people in the world who were generous and willing to give out charity to those in need were religious people. Excuse me, what?

I won't deny that some religious people and organizations are really into charity and helping out those in need. However, I know there are completely secular people and organizations out there who are willing to be generous and charitable as well. It's pretty obnoxious when the religious folk want to take all the credit for themselves for being generous and charitable. There's no prerequisite for being generous and charitable, certainly not one requiring belief in a religion.

In fact, if for some (unlikely) reason I amass up lots of excess money at the end of my life, I want to start a completely secular foundation as a legacy- one for all forms of the arts for all people.

Well, sure, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't take credit either.
That's not really what you're saying, at least I don't think it is.
edit:  "I won't deny that some religious people and organizations are really into charity and helping out those in need."  Ok.  Basically what I said in my second sentence.

this is true, generosity and readiness to help other beings isn't limited to people who belong to an official congregation of so-called religiosity. a good bunch of them are even the worst, while others are on the contrary true examples of what spirituality and goodness should be...
funnily enough, i hitchhike quite often, and guess what, 50% of the people who give me a ride are religious..haha. at least one good practical immediate application of their faith

True but a lot of liberal atheists I've heard of don't like charity because it's not a government program, oh I'm sorry, because it's "not effective enough"

Not sure where you're getting that from; I've honestly never heard that.

My own experience when debating with such people.

Actually it's the exact opposite; religious people tend to be much nastier. I would know, I deal with them every day. >_>

Nastier with charity?

That's what makes the claim even more ridiculous.

I can't help but feel many of the religious givers do it only so they can find God and Jesus in the after life and give their list of good deeds over, not saying all of em are like that just I can't help but see it's kind of taught that you do good not for the sake of goodness but so you go to heaven.

Which makes their motivations selfish, really.

What I hate sometimes about religious organizations is they they are only charitable to whom they want to be charitable to. And sometimes charities go towards very harmful practices. I do not approve of a lot of religious charities for that reason. Now that doesn't mean I wouldn't donate to one, but more than likely I would really only donate to a religious charity that has a clear goal of helping out with someone for this surgery or something like that. I've stopped throwing change into the one buckets because of what they use the money for and who they don't help.

My brother's church is like that.  Sure, they'll go paint a house in the ghetto part of town.  However, said house must be owned by a Christian person.  What the fuck is wrong with painting a run-down house for any person in the neighborhood, regardless of their beliefs?  And when they do go down to the homeless shelter to bring food and care packets, they have to shove their beliefs and mediocre music down the people's faces there.

That's just one of the many reasons I quit going and went my own way as far as religion goes.  Bloody awful, the lot of them.

Wow. I actually don't mind it if they play a little music and maybe pass out little pamphlets while giving. People could throw them away, and I've heard a lot of people say they like this and this music even though they aren't christian. So I guess not really doing any harm there, but when you are only charitable to a christian that is messed up. Jesus wasn't even like that. I thought we were supposed to do good for people even if they weren't christian?

That is just my view point mind you. I can see how the music and stuff might get annoying to another person however.

I do remember I was sitting in a ceremony with my friend who is a boy. He and I were both disgusted at this story. This one witness person was speaking about how they tried to pass a small bible out and when the lady said no that she didn't subscribe to that they put the small bible in with the tip. We both thought that was really pushing it. I think it's okay to offer, but you really shouldn't push it on someone. That is just going to push them further away as far as I'm concerned.

I'd just be straight up annoyed.  If I ever end up in that kind of situation, I'd be there to get sustenance and to get out so I can try finding a way to get myself out of said situation as quickly as possible.  I don't have time to waste by sitting and dawdling, listening to someone prattle on about something I, quite frankly, don't care about.

It is most commonly the opposite, religious people are often the quickest to condemn people that don't belong to their group in general.

It becomes very obvious on any social media site too, thus I stopped any interest in religion.
