It's chipboard, cut in the same shape and stacked up. With holes and grooves cut into it at strategic points for the innards!

Cool beans. I might try something similar with medium density fiberboard and PVC.

Fiberboard? Not to sound rude, but that might be a bit unnecessary. I've not worked with it, but fiberboard seems like more trouble than it would be worth for a smallish prop like this. I feel it would be harder to shape and sand, and is considerably heavier. If you're good with it, go for it! I'd be pleased to see the results!
