Description I just realized there is a terrible, terrible flaw with the shadow in this piece

Practice with backgrounds.

... I would not have noticed it if you had not mentioned it, as it is a good piece visually, regardless ... but I think everyone is right. There is more than one shadow flaw in this.

1. Tree shadow is opposite of everything else.

2. Mans shadow is straight horizontal, equal to his height (which would mean it was sunset, which it doesn't look like it is).

3. The Shadow being cast on the wall is taller than the object casting it (which would require the light to be shining UP from the ground).

4. The light on the rooftop in the background clearly shows the light being shone downward at a 45-degree angle (suggesting mid-moring/afternoon, which I suspect was the INTENDED time of day).

... none of which agree with one another at all.

I still really like this sketch/painting anyway.

I'm guessing its the shadow of the wall on the left, casting a shadow way higher than what it is.
Beautiful picture though, you do an excellent job with backgrounds

The wall on the left is broken and it's not casting a broken shadow, so yeah, that was what I was getting at.

I drew backgrounds before I ever drew characters.

I'm gonna guess that it's either a) the shadows on the tree look like they are from a different direction, or b) the shadow cast by the guy is just as tall as him (sun would be directly horizontal to him) while the rest of the shadows are cast differently.
ANYWAY. It's still pretty good. The tree could use some more texture maybe, but the composition and the drawing itself is very nice.
