Description Let's begin this year with an astrapothere!. Scaglia kraglievichorum is one of the Eocene astrapotheres found in Cañadón Vaca in Argentina, where several other primitive members has been found. These animals were similar in size to a modern tapir and the original remains represents to a juvenile; here I used to other two specimens, a specimen called MPEF PV 5478 classified as Scaglia cf. kraglievichorum and MPEF PV 5477, a partial mandible from an unknown species that could belongs to Scaglia. Both remains are from adult specimens and shows some unusual features as a very tall sagital crests, likely robust tusks and and a tall mandible. Despite these advanced features its snout is still not retracted and the nasals are normal. Likely the retractions of the nasals only begin with the evolution off a true trunk inn the later astrapotheriids as Astraponotus.
