Description I almost didn't post this yet because some areas are still pretty messed up. Like the shadows in the (figure's) left shoulder, part of hte background, the machines to the left of the piece, the equations on the shoulder can't be read, etc...

The college I'm soon to go to (CCAD) wants us to do a portrait of ourselves. I wanted something to show both my personality and a place I want to create, what I would create if I had the the resources, etc...)

It's very complicated and to be perfectly honest, I don't feel like explaining it right now.

Both the figure and the background need a lot of work, but I might only have time to put a little work in, considering I'm going to be busy before school.

I will update this when it's finished.

I love this. Hope you didnt change a thing - the muted palate and subdued colour work perfectly with the medium, the face and shoulder are beautifully modeled and the solidity of the head and shoulders are enhanced by the less three dimensional background (almost as if you are in front of a painted backdrop - the heavy shadow running into the background give a real three dimensional quality to the portrait and the expression is enchanting. Everything draws you to look at the subject of the painting - which is what a great portrait should do. Superb little piece and one of my favs great technique and beautiful to look at.

Holy Wow! This is awesome! I can't wait to have school with you! And yeah, same as everyone else...mine pales in comparison...is it in colored pencil? It's always a good sign when something looks so real that people don't know what the medium is, I think. So congratulations, and keep up the good work!

Thank you- you too. You people need to stop downplaying your things though. I think my stuff results more from patience than real skill.

And it's not colored pencil- keep guessing!

Wow, mine is a crayon coloring book compared to yours! Is this in oil?

Actually, I started an version of this in oil. However, I didn't think I'd have enough time for it to dry before school starts. Plus, it's on a little board so it would be hard to hang, but would be too wet to photocopy.

I also tried to photocopy my original drawing and watercolor over it, but that failed too because the ink on top of the paper was blocking its pores and wouldn't allow the water to soak in.

I haven't even started my self portrait.
I'm not sure if I'm going to do it.

But this is amazing and has a really nice classic feel to it.

Alls I can think for a critique/suggestion is maybe add some light in the eyes. They're very dark right now, but if that's what you're going for...

Yeah, it's a good suggestion. It's one of those dilemmas where the photo says one thing and I say another. But I tried lightening the eyes and it made me concentrate only on the irises, which made them look beady.

I had originally thought this was a mandatory thing, and if I knew it wasn't I don't know if I would've done it or not...

Well, I read on some forums that it wasn't mandatory (it was old though), but I still want to do it for practice-type work... but I can imagine, I'll be getting stuck with a billion of these projects when I go to school... So maybe it is best to just to whatever I feel like for practice for now..

Ugh, I really can't decide, but it's probably too late to do it now, considering I haven't even finished packing yet D:

Well, I personally fail when it comes to eyes, or I'd try to give ya some pointers

Packing, I mean.

._.

Well, I live in Illinois, so if I forget anything, it won't be coming to me any time soon.
Most of my problem with packing is deciding which of my clothes to take... I really don't have that much "stuff" I want to bring so it all comes down to impressing fashion kids and bringing enough pajamas to bum around in constantly ;D

Haha, you just gotta worry about those fashion kids stealing your idea if you wear something unique!
