Pretty easy to get started. Find wood - get knife - start cutting (the wood). Keep your knife sharp and Bandaids close. I started using an X-acto and a bar of soap (carve the soap) move up to wood when comfortable. No lessons needed.

They do not have to be dried to start carving (I like carving them when they are about 50% dry). The more fresh they are the softer the fibers. Remove the outer skin before carving (makes it easier to cut). The deeper you cut the softer the fibers. They love a sharp blade. When dry they sand very easily. Just give it a try - if you fuck it up, start on another one. Good luck.

Help me to find Mr. Jasper Schuringa and send him this message that I am intended to buy one of his used underpants at the price of 1000$ and complete my installation art.

My pleasure. I am playing around with EPS foam and find it intriguing. I may have some questions if you don't mind.

My method which will show on my new wip of my Steampunk mermaid that I will be posting latter to day is:
from a block or glued up blank carve were possible with hot wire and then diamond sharpened filet knife.
Sand with 40 grit no finer sand paper. Coat with epoxy to seal then apply fiber glass or matt with either epoxy or polyester resin. Note once you have sealed you can use either with out fear of melt. once I have a hard coat of resin and glass I power sand with 60 grit and start Bondo to get finial shape. From there as needed I use either more Bondo to build texture or Apoxy Sculpt brand epoxy putty to build details like scales the face hair etc. I make this Apoxy sculpt work like 'clay' by using denatured Alcohol to thin and add blending. Sand , file what ever until I am happy then everything is coated with a polyester sanding primer or gel coat to see if addition filling is need. If not paint and spray the clear coat with required sheen, Simple really just surfboard 101 ......

I've done surfboard glassing in the past. Just a little intimidated by all the new materials. This is different than wood carving - your materials actually cost $$. Are secret places to find cheap foam and resins?

Some Home Depots have white EPS foam instead of the blue or pink stuff. You can buy can of great stuff get someΒ woodenΒ sticks from grocery storeΒ and build up a thickness. You can use the pink or blue stuff it just carves with a different feel. I buy my resin from Florida Fiberglass Supply and have it shipped to me as Atlanta is not a big boating center. I also do this work commerciallyΒ and have client bay for materials, thus creating a bone pile of scraps that I glue together for my personal work now. As far as materials go wear mask, gloves and follow directions.

No website - just my Dev gallery. Commissions are priced by what you want. Small stuff runs between $30-$100+. My bigger stuff is $100/carved foot. What are you interested in? Many of my more recent carves are still available - just ask.
