Description Yeah, I know..

I finally got some clear skies ok

This is M42, Great Orion Nebula. Closest massive star forming region to us. Pretty impressive visually because its one of the brightest nebulas around. Running Man Nebula can be just about seen in the top left. Lil too much noise but thats the best I can do

30 Light frames @ 5 seconds
27 Darks
Stacked in DSS

ISO 6400
Skywatcher 200p Explorer
EQ-5 Mount
Hand tracked

(UPDATE --- Reprocessed thee image to bring out more detail, its a lil noisy but this was never gonna be perfect)

Bahahahahha!!! Oh dear god that was awful!!

I need some clear nights, its driving me insane that I can't fully test the new motor rig out!

This is really nice. Great job. Noise can hardly be avoided without more expensive equipment...My pics come out noisy also. Can I ask what camera you use?

Awesome shot!

Thanks

I used a D90. I'll be working on some better shots ones my motors are installed.

you can get a motor kit for the EQ5 mount for under 200$. My father and I modded my hand controller for the motor kit we got to have an autoguider port. You can get the autoguider port and instruction to do so from a website called 'Shoestring Astronomy.' It's quite easy to do and it worked great with Orion's StarShoot Autoguider. I easily got a 3 minute exposure with this set up, with a relatively poor polar alignment, and could have gone indefinitely but anything longer than 3 mins with my city skies and it just comes out pink.

Anyhow, good luck to you. It's an amazing hobby.

Yeah, I looked at those, decided to make my own instead, the motors and board should arrive today and then I get to start building. Hoping to a nice laptop controlled system and an st4 port for guiding, inspired by the very site you mentioned.

I look forward to it. It's proving tons of fun even when me and a friend spend two hours taking pics and hand tracking for one 100 usable shots.

it's a very good shoot !! I never imagine taht we can take the same thing xith only a camera, for me we need a telescope very expenssive ^^
Well done great as ever !

Yeah, you've seen my shots with only the camera. The extra "zoom" with the telescope is really needed.

I hope to get better when I built my motor tracking system

Question!

What are those darkframes? I know, I could google it, but I'm too lazy. I want to suck on your experience (...that sounded disgusting...)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

12GSuper In reply to DanielHeydecke [2012-01-15 11:49:31 +0000 UTC]

Bahahahahahah!!!

Dark frames are pics that you take with the lens cap on, basically it works out hot pixels and areas of noise. Allows the software to better work out what is a star and what is a bit of noise.

There's also flat and bias frames. Flat are white images to work out dust bits. And bias are.... are... something..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DanielHeydecke In reply to 12GSuper [2012-01-15 12:53:37 +0000 UTC]

Do you take these dark frames before you start shooting the stars or in between or after?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

12GSuper In reply to DanielHeydecke [2012-01-15 12:59:39 +0000 UTC]

At the moment I'm starting a "Library" of darks. So basically I have 30+ of them for what ever exposure settings I use.

I might head out tonight and try some wide angle stuff with the camera rather than the scope.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DanielHeydecke In reply to 12GSuper [2012-01-15 13:07:58 +0000 UTC]

Hm...guess I should try that too. I guess the camera settings on the dark frame have to be the same as on the actual photos?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

12GSuper In reply to DanielHeydecke [2012-01-15 17:19:53 +0000 UTC]

Yeah

Give it a try with your Sigma dude, with a high ISO and shorter shutter speed you'd likely be able to get some nice results

Hahah thanks, but its really noisey. I'm going out again tonight to add more data to it. The more images I take and "stack" together the better

CapturingTheNight [2012-01-14 23:56:39 +0000 UTC]

Fantastic once again You are doing an awesome job hand tracking these mate. Kinda makes me feel lazy using all the gadgets and gizmos I have.

Small clarification needed though. M43 is the round like nebula just next to M42 on the left. The nebula at the far top left is the Running Man Nebula

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

12GSuper In reply to CapturingTheNight [2012-01-15 00:10:14 +0000 UTC]

Bollocks, I thought M43 was designation for Running Man. Fail! Corrections going in as we speak. Cheers!

Sooner I can get a motor the better, I'm stuck between knocking one up with a custom hand controller or splashing out on a "proper" EQ-5 RA motor. Synscan is a way off, if ever right now sadly.

I've never had my head so full of gear ratios and ways to program a stepper motor. Bloody things
