Awesome! A bit of a weird question (and believe me, I know you've gotten WAY too many questions about this), but how did you make the dark red line the mark the international border of Austria-Hungary? I've tried doing something similar, but it always traces the entire shapeβ€”coastlines included, which I don't want.

I'm not going to be doing this on photoshop!
But let's see if I can do it altogether! Thanks Blomma!

On Step 2, how do you use the blending options only for the traced regions? It only lets me use the blend options for the entire layer, thus making the border of the map my desired effect.

What you could do is trace it with the pen tool, right click when it is done, click on "make selection" and that will give you a selection of the area you just traced. Another option is to use the polygonal lasso too, thought I have personally not had much luck with it.

For the first question, I use the pen tool to trace and then right click and click "fill path".

Not sure what you mean in your second question. Can you elaborate?

Regular pen tool. If you zoom in you don't need to bend the anchor points because they will be so small anyway. After you've finished one path, right click and click "fill path" and then "delete path" to get it on a normal layer.

Which tool/pen exactly do I use for tracing?

1Blomma In reply to ImEdWunclerIII [2013-10-01 11:21:28 +0000 UTC]

It's simply called "pen tool".

Excellent tutorial! I am very comfortable in Illustrator, but not so much Photoshop. This should help me get out there some more. Just one question: is the pencil tracing with lasso? I have always just used the Pen tool and regarded the Pencil something relegated to rough sketching.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

1Blomma In reply to Heptahedroid [2013-06-26 13:08:37 +0000 UTC]

The pencil sketching is done with the pencil tool, not the lasso. That is, if you are referring to the sketching of national borders?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Landsknecht1904 [2013-06-17 15:44:14 +0000 UTC]

Question: with what tool do you sketch the nation borders and with what tool do you cut them out?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

1Blomma In reply to Landsknecht1904 [2013-06-18 14:48:00 +0000 UTC]

Pencil tool for the first question, pen tool or polygonal lasso tool for the second.
