Description Shadow Play I

Pencil on Illustration Board 20" x 40"

This work might seem a little different for me but it’s not really, it’s is in line with a series I have been working on called “Earth Currents” an homage to abstract space, nature and celebrating the insignificant. I found this root while taking walk and I knew I had to study and draw it. My concentration was on the shadow and the long negative space. The root itself was interesting and complex but laying the light in from an extreme angle made the piece work. When I do a major drawing like my current wip “Drawing of Clint” it can become so involved and so time consuming that I have to step back and do a non-narrative study of something that just fascinates me.

Thanks for looking

Armin

I love how you have captured the essence of this gnarled root. The shadow play appears like the ghost or spirit of the wood. Set off against the white board, it is truly dramatic in its simplicity. The portrait format works very well with this as you've brought the viewer into an intimate connection with this root as in a traditional portrait study. Well Done!

This is a very successful piece. It's a great study of negative space plus the overall balance of the subject as offset with the cast shadow is well presented on the page. The impression of the root with the cast shadow takes on an "insect-like" appearance at first glance and appears alive. This is cool because we are looking at a carefully rendered "dead" root yet it still has life in this representation. Very nice.

Love the composition of this piece, beautiful contrast! The shadow almost seems to have a life of it's own, I can imagine it blowing away like a wisp of smoke. Well done Armin sir.

Glory to the unsignificant, for so are we all!

It might be the most beautiful root I've ever seen. Even it's shadow looks great, but the highlight must be the bend on the top of the main trunk.

This is EXACTLY what my goal in my current drawing is about. Your twigg is withered, but the tones of hyperrealism would be different then yours. To make it so that it matches up a balance to make it CONVINCING real and at the same time marks your style as an artist. Your composition with thrown shadows is right at it's place and you have the tendency to grab it out of the paper. So if that effect is crossed over, your goal in my believes is reached.

It is always nice to see your work. I feel so much stronger as an artist knowing that others work through the same difficulties as myself. Thanks for being so dedicated! You are excellent. So is this drawing.

Your composition is well chosen. Especially for playing with negative space. As always your mark making is subtle, strong and a beautiful illusion of reality.

OK, do not laugh at me, but I do not know the name of them and I tried to research on what they are, but I drew an example and it just reminds me of them: [link]

I think they like have some air on the bottom that blows through and then they are like swaying and all. You might see them once int he blue moon in front of some store, like some washing machine store. I do not know what they are, but I got an image of that stuck in my mind. Yet, of course a twig is stiff and not flowing, but the shape just have that one thing pop into my head.

Armin,

It is good to see you post "studies" as well as WIPs and finished works. I sometimes feel like I'm wasting time by drawing this and that and trying different techniques, and light sources and stuff. I'm encouraged seeing you -still- doing these types of things. Thanks!

Mmmmmmmmmm why do you think it’s a waste of time?? “Art of the New”……can be accomplished in any “ism” with any medium but its very hard and rare but worth the pursuit. In the sixties a couple of noobs committed suicide as “art” for they thought everything was accomplished, thinning of the heard I guess. No one knows if what they do is new or should anyone care, do what is honest, say something about how you personally see the world and share it with others, be sincere about your work not just that it has to shock, be new or avant-garde, that mind set is doomed anyway.
