Colby . . . hmmm, let me see if I can explain. Colby was created in the same pool of toxic waste Maw was. Long story short, a millionaire (trying to avoid getting in trouble with the law for his illegal wildlife collection) dumped a bunch of half-dead exotic animals in the same toxic waste pool that Sellette Brodequin would later wash up in. Sellette got mixed shark DNA, turning her into Maw; a starfish got human DNA, making him sentient.
The problem is that a starfish is essentially a prey species. It doesn't get eaten as much as regular fish, but it still survives by hiding and reproducing as fast as it can. Transplanting human consciousness and intelligence into a prey species creates, well, Colby. A coward (with few natural defenses, he has to hide to avoid death), a pervert ("Gotta pass on my genetic material. Must propagate species! MUST!"), and a snarky bugger (unable to actively fight back, he settles for mocking things that can kill him). The perviness means he hits on anything female and breathing, including human women. He has an unrequited crush on Jenna Jameson.

*blinks* Do I want to know how Colby got that human DNA? It's clearly not Sellette's otherwise 1) he'd be a she and 2) would act way more like an 'angel on the shoulder' than he all ready does or at least would spout Shakespeare quotes.
Not all starfish are prey. Check out the Sunflower or the Crown of Thorns starfish. Unless you mean Colby's specific species, which looks kind of like a Cushion Star and as a scavenger, they're definitely a prey species.

Well, I suppose it depends on how far you want to stretch your mental allowances for the magic of Gotham toxic waste. 
And hey, DNA =/= destiny. Colby thinks Shakespeare is boring as hell. XD He did get some of her memories that even she doesn't have any more (chalk that up to their near-telepathic link), which is why he's the only one who calls her by her original name.
Agreed on the Crown of Thorns et al, but I specifically wanted him as a scavenging prey animal to contrast with Maw's aggressive bitey predator. I actually invented a species for him; he's the Lesser Yellow-Peaked Starfish, nearly extinct thanks to habitat loss and the fact that they were previously used as a cheap material for fish food.

Yep, yep, and yep. She could conceivably ask Colby for definitive answers--but she won't ask, and chances are, he wouldn't give 'em anyway. He knows how badly damaged she is, and Maw herself only half understands that she used to be someone else anyway; thinking of it causes her near-physical pain.
A rare species . . . and likely to get rarer if he doesn't learn to cram a sock in it.

And Colby might be annoying, but she'd never do anything to him. I actually did a little four-paneler where she got shipped to Arkham with Colby in a fishtank . . . the doctor said it was an "integral part of her psychosis." And nobody else was willing to share a cell with her.

Heh I should have said something the first time, but I am enjoying the heck out of this adventure. I TOTALLY got that it was the Jaws theme and that it was the Colby singing it on first glance, even before I saw the "Shut up, Colby." You sense of humor and story telling seems very natural and unforced. I'm digging it! Made me laugh as I was sitting at my desk.
