Description Howdy hey! Thought I'd start posting some of the vehicle commission art I've been doing for the brand new strategy game Pure Steam . Please check 'em out!

EDIT: an updated repaint (2020)

Sketchup, 0.5 mechanical pencil & Photoshop

Btw, not to be confused with the steamwagon in my SSnPP comic, haha. ;D

I find this very believable, Not too far from what the original tanks looked like before strengths and weakness were worked out. Had things gone slightly differently I could see this being built in the late 1800's. I myself would not build a flame gout on a wooden vehicle, but again they did build so big mistakes back at the beginning.
Looks Cool too!

What could possibly go wrong?
Thanks~

It looks a lot like a locomotive, but I think making it out of wood makes it far more interesting. It's more primitive and I think it's too easy to make a boring juggernaut with an over sized metal box.

Well, it came into service under dire times, I'm thinking.

Awesome! The landship rendition you've made is both effective and plausible-feeling. It's just whimsical enough to be fun without looking impossible.

I think having a sense of whimsy is important. I tell my friends just that, regarding Strike Witches.

It's a little known sub-meaning of the word, but "whimsy" can also mean "magical girls who fly around without skirts".

Fascinating. It is always cool when one puts a cannon on one's vehicle. Blows all RVs in the vicinity.

Aw yeah I like this angle XD maximizes how scary it looks! But geez you sure know how to go nuts with the details! The size comparison with the person just makes it more intimidating, however I do find the door cute looking :I

47ness In reply to JesnCin [2012-09-28 06:07:35 +0000 UTC]

Which angle do you like more? I personally think the low angle is scarier, but I ended up using the high angle so you can see more of the design. My teachers always warned me that vehicles drawn at a high angle risk looking toy-like.

Darn proud of that cute door. The vehicle is supposed to be quasi-civilian.

JesnCin In reply to 47ness [2012-09-28 06:50:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I actually like the low angle more, since we get it from a more human perspective. But it makes me want to see what the top of the steam wagon looks like XP

Cute doors next to cute windows foreverrr

My thoughts zactly.

I should ttly add a face on them and sell them as merchandise.

Don't forget to add a bow! The door is begging for a pretty yellow ribbon or something :3

That's awesome. Is the sketch above done entirely by hand or did you use SketckUp to help get the perspective and then build on top of that? Or was SketchUp used to create the base for the rendering of the vehicle? I'm curious to know more about the process of doing design work like this.

47ness In reply to AlbinoGrimby [2012-09-28 01:00:26 +0000 UTC]

It's a back-and-forth actually.

I start with a 2-D profile view (either on paper or in Photoshop), then import the image into Sketchup and build out a rough model. I find a pleasing angle, screencap it, and print it out as an underlay and trace over it, adding in all the final details.

AlbinoGrimby In reply to 47ness [2012-10-05 16:24:56 +0000 UTC]

I'm going to have to play with SketchUp some more and learn it better. Everytime I want to do 3D, I noodle with it in Blender, but there's just too many buttons and hotkeys to really be focused and SketchUp seems to just let you focus on work. Thanks for explaining your process on that drawing. I always like to hear how people work. BTW, when you do backgrounds, do you usually test out compositions in Sketchup or just with quick thumbnails? Or both?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

47ness In reply to AlbinoGrimby [2012-10-05 23:08:39 +0000 UTC]

Both. I like to start with thumbnails to keep things fresh. I might doodle in a more objective, overhead shot of the setting so I'll have a main point of reference when modeling.

Once I have the model, I can really start to nail a good comp. (plus have backup comps, in case anything stands out) Here's a couple examples:

interior BG process

exterior BG process

I remember that second process picture. I fav'ed it a while back with some intention of going back to look at it again, but then I got busy on another project at home. Thanks for the links.

Cool steam wagon dude

So what dose it do?

47ness In reply to TOONOLOGY [2012-09-27 23:19:11 +0000 UTC]

This particular model is designed to safely transport troops and civilians through hostile territory. Sometimes the rails can be used to ferry additional passengers (who obviously couldn't afford a first-class ticket, haha)
