I was once at Autodromo Nazionale Monza for the Italian Grand Prix. I saw Senna race. I was quite young. But I remember it all very well. I cried when he died. I cried also when Dale Sr. died. I went to the Daytona 500, in 2004 the year Dale Jr won. I recall how I sat in Turn 4. And on the third lap everyone put up three fingers to honor him. I cannot say that I am some sort of gear head. I am not. And I really cannot say why motorsport captivates me. But it does. My sister says I like it because of its danger. But I do not think that is what it is. I am not really a car lover though either. I mean I enjoy my car. But I do not know the subtleties that you do. I think it is the same feeling I get like when I would watch the Space Shuttle lift off. It is the symphony of a great number of people, all working toward a goal I think. Racing is not only the driver. A victory is the product of many peoples labors. I think this is what thrills me most. I think humans are capable of great things.

When Villeneuve died I lost interest in Formula 1, although that may also have been because as a teenager the prices had started to creep beyond what I could afford, but without Villeneuve there just wasn't enough of a draw. This may give an idea of why, if you haven't seen it before: [link]
I went to my first "limited sportsman" NASCAR sanctioned race when I was around 5 years old. I got to ride around the track in Jean-Paul Cabana's race car with 4 other kids when I was six. At 14, I got to work on a friend's older brother's pit crew as a tire changer. In those days, "limited sportsmen" races weren't long enough to need tires during the race, but they would run randomly in either direction, so as a tire changer, my job was to help swap the bigger sized tires to the outer side in the few moments after the direction was announced but before the cars were allowed out onto the track! Motorsports have been a part of my life since I was quite young, despite neither of my parents having any interest whatsoever. I guess it's something you get or you don't, like opera or hip hop. I really like how you described it however, it truly is a team sport where unlike football where you can play around a poor player, in racing anyone not doing his or her job properly will almost certainly cost a victory.

Yeah, I've never liked the sound of the Ferrari V8s; I miss the days of the Panoz P900s, now THAT is what a V8 is suppsed to sound like!

Hmm.... I never saw one of these live but have seen them a lot in Dad's 1/32nd slot car racing and also on TV BITD.
I do feel the Chevy V-8 sounds better than the Ford, Dad explained it's the firing order difference that causes the different sounds in both cases. I love the Corvette GT1 and 2's myself, very close to the ex-Penske Lola T70 I saw at the Glen with the TRACO Chevy engine...

While I like the sound of a Chevy engine, there is something about the sound of a Ford smallblock that is impossible to ignore. My F250 has a 302 donated by a '91 Mustang, and it has a deep sound that makes people come up to me and ask what it is. This guy in a RAM 3500 wanted to know if I'd dropped a bigger engine in (The F250 would have come with a 396). When I tell them it's a 302, they stare blankly, but I've learned that people don't seem as stunned when I tell them it's a 5 litre. Weird huh?

That makes sense. I'm noticing some paint damage down low too. Those cars aren't built to go 4-wheeling.

Nope, but it's pretty amazing how tough carbon fibre can be.
You can see damage at the base of the left rear wheel flare, probably from scraping the concrete strip.
