Description ROSEWAY is a National Historic Landmark ship and the primary platform for the World Ocean School , a nonprofit organization operating from St. Croix, USVI and Boston, MA.

Built in 1925, Roseway has led a long and distinguished career, serving as a racing yacht, a fishing vessel, and a pilot boat guiding Allied vessels through minefields and antisubmarine nets during World War II.

When she was retired in 1972, Roseway was the last sailing pilot boat in the United States. She then began serving passengers as a charter vessel off the Maine coast before falling into disrepair.

In 2002, the World Ocean School began a two-year restoration. Today, after more than 80 years of service, Roseway is again sailing the Atlantic providing educational programs to underserved youth worldwide.

This may not be the schooner I boat-sat in St. Croix for a few months in 1976.  I never paid attention to the boat's name at the time or just forgot, but her hull and sail colors look very familiar.

She was anchored in the small St. Croix harbor and was owned or just managed by a rather colorful character (he pulled a 45 revolver on me for breaking one of his Corningware dishes on the schooner - no, I'm not kidding).

I was 21 at the time and had bought myself a 6' fiberglass dingy to go from boat to shore and back.  An aspiring singer-songwriter at the time, I carted my 12 string guitar in its bulky case inn that tiny dingy too.

I was what we would then call a "wharf rat" - I took whatever jobs I could, mostly deck hand on catamarans and other day trip boats for tourists.

Even was a snorkel coral reef guide on one at Buck Island, home of the local "celebrity": Charlie the Barracuda. He'd lost much of his tail in a fight at one point, so hanging out in the labyrinth of corals was a safe zone. He got used to the tourists, and they to him.

I looked up the history of owners for the Roseway and it's hard for me to tell if she was indeed my home back then.  But schooners of this size and marking are rare. The coincidence is just a bit much  As I recall, the colorful guy was from the U.S. North-East, too, which fits with her history in Massachusetts.

Whatever the case, everything was vintage - when I went below deck to retire for the night it was like going back in time or living in a boat-museum. I don't recall exactly what I cooked on during the few times that I did so on-board, must have been a portable camping type propane one-burner.

And, yes, she creaked and groaned a bit a night. She was not in disrepair at the time, but also not kept ship-shape.  More like parked away for a while.

Whether she was or was not my home, it was certainly a memorable, one-time experience live on that kind of schooner.

Wow thank you for sharing this story! That's really amazing. I never got to go on one of these gorgeous ships. I've been only able to sigh at them from the shore. You're very fortunate.

Pardon very late reply, but I don't visit DA much. You're welcome, and all true. I actually emailed the company that owns her and while they didn't know anyone from back then to confirm her being there at the time, it's also likely people may not have noticed that much: she was anchored at the outer rim of the small harbor, smaller 20-feet type, modern sailing boats where the most common.

And the photos I've seen on the "classroom" type interior she now has is SO totally different from her original interior, the one I lived in for about half a year. It was liking going back in time to the turn of the century. An antique so to speak.

Small correction or being more specific: at the time she was anchored at the outer edge of the Christiansted Harbor, St. Croix to the west of Protestant Cay where a hotel was and still is located. She was the largest sailing boat in that part harbor at the time, so probably why she was anchored the most outward bound.  The only larger sailing vessel at that time was one was dock-tied at another part of the waterfront to the west - probably at least a third longer than the Rosewood, owned by some very rich kid.

Tall ships came back last year but we were too lazy to go see em. Wanted to ride instead.
