Description The lampooned object
Merlin is a TV-series, produced by the BBC, about Merlin from the Arthurian legend. The writers have taken fresh approach to the source material, the set-up is this:

Youthful sorcerer Merlin is newly arrived at Camelot, a castle lorded by king Uther. Uther hates magic and has made it his life's mission to eradicate everyone who practices it. With so much blood on his hands, Uther's Camelot is the natural target of attacks from the few, vengeful magicians who have survived. Merlin is told by a dragon that it is his destiny to protect future king Arthur, so Merlin must defend Camelot from magical attacks, while at the same time keeping his own powers a secret from everyone. A heavy burden indeed, especially since the unwittingly protected Arthur is such a prat.

The core cast is very likeable, and because the writers have changed so many details one can experience a thrill of expectation each time a familiar character presents him-/herself by name, knowing what their main role is but without exactly how events will play out, just that in the end, somehow, everything is going to end in tears.

Comment to anachronisms
The Arthurian legend is traditionally set in the 9th century, sometimes the 12th. The BBC series is hard to pinpoint in time: the clothes appear, in part, to be mediaeval but Camelot looks as though it was built in the 15th century or later. For this Arthurian legend to make sense it would have to be set in the 16th century as they have both potatoes, tomatoes (from America) and glass mirrors (not invented until the 16th century). The telephone catalogues are my own addition. I'm sure I would let even that pass.

Merlin is the intellectual property of the hallowed BBC.

Yeah, accuracy was definitely not their main concern, I know, and I loved the show. I am just poking fun

Your story synopsis is quite interesting. It would have changed quite a lot.Β

What i thought was odd was the fact that it had a castle. Castles were brought over by the french when William I conquered England 1066. Before that the only architecture was monasteries and palaces styled from Ancient Rome. Love your drawing it made me laugh.

Yeah, that too! They picked a fairly new castle as well. I have to confess I like the way the castle looks though Β

Tomatoes and black people were the first thing what caught my eye. That would have been interesting in the 9th century. However I still enjoy it since it's a tv series not a history lesson. Same thing was with Hercules and Xena though... And with many other films and tv shows. Anyway: your drawing is funny! I LOLed at that one!

I have this problem with my roommates. They refuse to even try and enjoy the show because of the inaccuracies. It's frustrating.
Love the comic! (we should definitely throw carebears at Merlin!)

This just about sums up my relationship with this show. The historical inconsistency bothers me but I just can't stop watching!

So funny .

The legends are actually set in the sixth centuary. There are so many versions (Lancelot did not exist in the earilist ones; Morded was the son of Morgause and King Lot; Morgan Le Fay was not evil and either Arthur's full or half-sister, and was even one of the fay who take Arthur to Avalon; Merlin had a sister...so many!) but most are in the sixth centuary.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Aeonna In reply to DragonKnightMirren [2012-01-11 18:21:08 +0000 UTC]

The version I heard had Morgan Le Fay as Arthur's half sister AND the mother of their common child, Mordred. I'm hoping that's a mix up of several other versions that are slightly less crazy each by their own.

DragonKnightMirren In reply to Aeonna [2012-01-11 19:44:55 +0000 UTC]

Well, that is a retcon, from what I have heard. I like that there are so many versions, as you can pick your favourite . Also, the legends are originally Welsh, and Excalibur used to be called 'Caliburn'. Yeah, I read alot of legend stuff...Robin Hood, Beuwulf, King Arthur, etc.

samantha994 In reply to DragonKnightMirren [2012-02-24 16:29:53 +0000 UTC]

Please allow me to correct: Excalibur was originally called Caledfwlch, then named Caliburn by Monmouth (latin influence) and Malory called it Excalibur ("Cut steel"). (I have a paper on this, so I couldn't help myself but to correct you.)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DragonKnightMirren In reply to samantha994 [2012-02-24 17:50:36 +0000 UTC]

Well, I know originally it was Caledwlch. Caliban and Excalibur are two different words in most, though. It is ok.

Perhaps people are still confused with the whole sword in stone and sword from lake thing... Which I find a shame, but is beautifully adapted in 1981(this may be wrong ) Excalibur

Ah, my mum's boyfriend recomented I see that too. I can't find anywhere online/in the shops to watch it, though. Well, it is a cenuaries-old legend. We are bond to get things mixed up somewhere down the line .

Did you see the BBC version of young Robin Hood? It seems to be in the same style as Merlin (but not quite as good).

DragonKnightMirren In reply to Aeonna [2012-01-13 23:19:13 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it was great until season 2, and the chickification of Maid Marian. At least "Merlin" is more historically acurate, though it still is an Anachronism Stew, though I enjoy "Merlin" very much .

It is a family-friendly re-telling of the Arthur saga, but don't let that put you off - it isn't all cozy and fluffy, because amid all the happy endings and friendship, as a watcher, you KNOW that everything is doing to go awry in the most horrible, horrible way.
