Key into his/her's mind, with a protective and tense grasp allowing few if any to unlock.

this is keyman. He cannot think without the key inserted in his face, and he cannot see when the key is inserted in his face.

this shows you why it sucks to be keyman.

Never be a keyman!

The key to all things is our mind. The difficult part of life is learning to unlock it.

By the way.....
I was in Tokyo once.

Well I was only there a very short period of time. I was in Japan for about 12 days on a photo shoot. My biggest memory of Tokyo was going out for a late night on the town not realizing that you need to reserve a cab. When it was time to go back to the hotel we had no way back, and had to beg two girls we had met in the bar for a ride back.

you don't have to reserve a taxi... you just wave them down. unless you're far from the center of tokyo...

Well this was a while ago...
All I know is when we came out of the bar that night, all the taxi's were reserved and we were walking unless someone gave us a ride. Are you Japanese? If not what brings you to Japan?

An enigmatic and witty image.

I like the fact that the key holding individual is also a cypher, which might prompt the question whether there is actually any thing to unlock?

Sometimes, I wish could easily locate the key to my own mind. We have control over our actions... but not our thoughts or our feelings. I like the idea that there is a way of unlocking our consciousness...

I love surreal art and art that makes me ponder such questions. also love the use of color

I enjoy the image of us as human beings hold the key to our own thoughts. And I also like the image that we are empty until we put the key in. Ultimately, we control our thoughts, otherwise we remain empty. This is what this painting makes me feel. I like the sharp contrast of the body versus the background. Good piece.

I had a similar idea last year, but it remained a little sketch that get lost somewhere. I liked the idea, but quitted because I didn't feel like I had the skills to make it. I'm happy to find it here interpreted by your sensibilty .
I like your work very much, it seems like he's staring at you even if he hasn't eyes. The colour of the shadow is so well balanced. I like the way you put some tones of the background on the key too.

aeravi In reply to nnicc [2009-02-10 04:52:00 +0000 UTC]

this image was actually very much a sketch in a way... sometimes it works like that. sometimes i plan and work things out, and sometimes things just kinda fall into place. that's what happened with this one, so i feel almost like it made itself!! it wanted to exist...
the background and the key are EXACTLY the same, actually. i painted the greens afterwards, and only did a little bit of highlighting and shadows on the key...

thank you for the thoughtful feedback!

you should never quit because you fear your work won't be good enough. just do it, and see what happens... you might surprise yourself!

I didn't catch the bit about the key being exactly the same as the backdrop - that's nicely subtle. I do think the surreality hits a 'squick' factor for me, however - just can't seem to get past that big ole slot in the head. *shudder*
