I really like what he did with the focus here. It gives it good diagonal motion, and the contrast between the two items in focus - your face/shoulders and the rough terrain (I assume it's grass) - gives it the feeling of some underlying conflict.

I'd love to try out one of those cameras.

i will gladly give you a few critiques although, i don't know very much about portraits... so my suggestions may be a bit limited :/ but i shall do my best.

i want to warn you that i'm going to be completely honest. so be prepared for that >_<
also, if my suggestions on your portraits are not in depth enough, i'd suggest looking up a portrait tutorial here on dA. they actually have some very good tutorials here that have helped me a lot.

This is a really nice shot, Michelle. Makes me wonder what you were thinking about as you gazed off to the side. How did you take it? Did the camera have a timer?

AForAdultery In reply to mistysnowymadness [2010-03-02 03:05:04 +0000 UTC]

it was taken by my friend chris whom i met in a college film photography class... he has a really unique style... and the camera was badassss.
this shot [link] and this shot [link] were also taken by him.
it was actually sheer luck that he made the focus like that, and i looked in that direction. his portraiture shoots are really laid back, and i just kinda have to choose an expression xD

In that case you're a great model for him to work with--sounds like from what you wrote that the face you present is up to you. Focus, framing, and bokeh are tricky, but in all those shots it's your expression that sells the shot (in my humble opinion). The shot that I must give him big credit for is the one of you in the sunglasses. From what I understand of large format, which is next to nothing, focusing is difficult and time consuming, so for him to line you up and wait for the right moment seems like it would have been a challenge. OK, I'll also give him credit for the fact that in the shot with you holding the grass in your mouth, the camera angle is nice--a bit above face level. I thought that was cool. Otherwise, give yourself some credit too! Sheesh!

the sunglasses one was actually not taken with the 3x5... it was taken with his nikon i think... but yeah focus the 3x5 was ridiculous... there were like six or more knobs to adjust usually had to wait five or ten minutes just for him to focus, and i had to stay really still xD
probably the reason why in "remorseful gaze" the focus seems more on my shirt than my face. i remember that i was really hyper that day

yeah he was on a step stool for that shoot.

pssh i was just standing there! the only thing i contributed to that shot was the wheat in my mouth and the only other thing i like about my other shots he's taken are my shirts... in two of them i'm wearing really pretty designed shirts.

Can't be a great photographer of models without great models...

Your eyes are what sell those shots, all of them, as well as the one where you're looking up at a camera above you. I don't know if you took that one or if your friend did. It's called "Dreamer" I think.

The only one that doesn't feature your eyes is the one with the shades, and obviously there are other things like the shades, the cool pose, that sell that one.

AForAdultery In reply to mistysnowymadness [2010-03-02 04:41:47 +0000 UTC]

xD i took dreamer myself... was going for a kind of "yearning" expression... and i think i got it... maybe. i made it up high to make it kinda like a "puppy-eyes" effect.
personally, the sunglasses one is my favorite. the expression of my mouth makes the whole picture i think.

mistysnowymadness In reply to AForAdultery [2010-03-02 04:48:00 +0000 UTC]

Yes! I think that's what you achieved with that shot. A yearning look. I almost mistook the title, though, and had to double-check to see if I'd read it right. I had been about to write that the look matched the title, but I was wrong. The look I saw was "dreamy" rather than "dreamer". I thought, "dreamy eyes." But I don't know. I suppose it can be the same thing, now that I think about it.

Good night, Michelle! Don't stay up all night!

Nice and subtle. I'd cut a bit on the top, but really only a bit. If there are autumn colors in the background, I'd really like to see them. And I wouldn't blur the foregoround, since the girl and her clothing emanate a proper degree of gentleness. All in all a very pleasant photo
