Description This is my Keypsake Rose trade for ~Rafica ! The mare is her mare Keypsake Rose, if you weren't able to gather that from the title... Her half of the trade isn't quite finished yet so I'll add the link to it later

I didn't put the upmost detail or attention into everything in this piece..it was more of a relaxed painting. The background may be a bit dreary because of its' simplicity. I like how the sand, dapples, and body tones turned out so I'm happy! Download for details!!

I hope this is a fitting tribute and that you like it dear!

I think this is one of the best things I've ever seen from you. The horse is beautiful, I like the face, the overall pose and movement, the subtle colouring. The light is wonderful and the simple background compliments the horse perfectly. I wouldn't change a thing.
This style seems to fit you, and I wouldn't mind seeing you do more something like it. Everything doesn't need to be refined up to every smallest detail to look realistic and perfectly finished - doing some parts a bit more loosely and refining others usually just makes the picture more interesting and takes nothing away from the final result.

Thank you so much dear! You did comment!
I actually was surprised how well it came out...just being simple and certain parts detailed where they needed to be but overall just a flow. Pleasantly suprised to say the least! Thank you so very much, I'm glad you think so!

You're welcome. It indeed looks like a piece that's been created with things just falling to right places.

And yes, shocking to see me commenting, isn't it! I'm some thousand deviations behind and don't have much time but I refuse to abandon commenting altogether. So, bear with my very late comments, they come when you least expect.

I can imagine you're super behind. I'm proud of you for attempting to catch up! I definitely wasn't expecting a comment.

This looked like a photo in the thumbnail...

You've done a great job with the colours and tones in the horse's coat ~ greys are such an awkward colour to recreate! I'm really impressed by the sand. It just looks so real.

finally got to this
love the sand colours reflected up onto her coat.

the coat texture and detail is great. with the mane and tail, I would only suggest softening the ends with very low-opacity eraser, just so the strands don't end so abruptly.

really lovely but I did tell you that already, I think... lol.

Beautiful! It has such photographic quality , especially in the body, legs and shadow. The sun looks a bit on the large side but otherwise it's fantastic!

That is really amazing, white horses are so difficult to paint but you've done it wonderfully

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ahuvah In reply to mirrors-truth [2008-12-01 02:55:36 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I thought that it would be really difficult going into it, but this was actually fairly painless since I was able to use colors directly from teh reference!

mirrors-truth In reply to Ahuvah [2008-12-01 03:51:45 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome! Do you mean you picked the colours with the eyedropper tool? I used to pick from photos lol and by doing that I've learnt how to 'look' for colours within a picture, like my eyes have become the dropper tool lol and I think that's why I can paint so realistically now without needing to pick colours anymore ^_^ Even if u did pick the colours it still takes a good artist to be able to paint with them!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ahuvah In reply to mirrors-truth [2008-12-01 05:40:03 +0000 UTC]

Yes. Actually, though sometime I will probably try to come up with colors on my own...most of my pieces are a try at realism and so I try to keep the colors as close as possible which is mostly why I use them directly from the reference. Of course, if I didn't use the eyedropper I'd probably take about 600 times longer and it would look a lot worse than it does.

mirrors-truth In reply to Ahuvah [2008-12-01 23:02:04 +0000 UTC]

It is difficult to come up with your own colours especially if ur doing a realistic pic. When I work on pet portraits, I always have my reference handy and I look very closely at the colours and try to match them with the colours I choose. Of course it takes a long time to do but I find that I can think up even more realistic/vibrant colours this way instead of picking the colours from the photos, because most of my ref photos are pretty shocking colour-wise (eg. dull or too bright etc) so I don't really have a choice lol xD But I think using the eyedropper tool is good practice because it helps you learn about all the colours in the one subject, and you'll find eventually you wont even need to use it anymore

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ahuvah In reply to mirrors-truth [2008-12-02 03:12:47 +0000 UTC]

Mhmm... I'm a bit too lazy for that actually, I'd probably just edit the reference photo until I was happy with it, and if that still didn't work I'd add colors over top or edit once I'd finished.

It is so beautiful! I think the horizon line might be too blurry, but that's about all I can think of. I like that you didn't add much detail, it really accentuates the bright sunlight reflecting off of that coat. The horse, of course, looks amazing!
