Description "Our souls are one. Our bodies are one. Heaven knows the Creator foresaw this centuries ago and inspired our ancestors to walk their path towards it."

"... yet even if this is true, Meiliketh will hunt us for seeking this out. Aren't you frightened?"

"A little. Only for you, though, for I know not where my battles will take me."

"Where they will take us, you mean."

"Kaly..."

"You'll need me by your side, my love. And with the Three's guidance, may it be even fruitful."

"And when that time comes..."

"I will be your wife, Evy. Yet let's not keep the priestess waiting any longer. She wants to see a kiss."

-- Evaryr & Kalysia

There was no turning back now. Marked as traitors to the Ailyrenai Kingdom, Evaryr and Kalysia were forced into hiding where few dreamed one of the Unseen Ones' greatest military leaders could bear to be as the realms of his kin knew one of its darkest eras in history. Yet after saving his bride to be from the hands of death the Mad King wanted for her, a short, happy moment in the couple's lives unfolded as they sought out the blessings of a priest to see them finally wed. Although they were lovers for many years before, they knew it was time to declare themselves married before God.

And so they did, in secret, as they exchanged their vows in a lake that had long been blessed by the Three Sisters as a holy place where no one questioned Evaryr's commitment to baptise himself and his bride with an exchange of vows, eternal in their meaning and memorised well in their hearts. And so they re-emerged from the waters there as husband and wife, now and forevermore as equals, knowing themselves thereon as one body, soul and mind. There was no way a Phoenix King or any of his blind followers were going to separate them anymore. Only failure found those who dare tried.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes, I know... this artwork in itself is nothing particularly amazing by my usual standards, but the purpose for it is to celebrate the original nature of Saint Valentine's Day. It is a nature that has, sadly, been forgotten by most people in this day and age... and why? There are few days in this world anymore that are remembered for what they originally stood for. I'm sure I could inspire an argument by pointing a blaming finger to the soulless, secularist environment that we as a people have long accepted into our world at face value, over the past few decades, but I wouldn't have the patience for anyone trying to defend what 'Valentine's Day' has become, because... just don't. It's a shallow notion and you don't need a special day like this to remind your love how much you care for them...
Instead, learn some history. Learn why the priest, Valentine, became a martyr. Learn why Emperor Claudius II forbade his soldiers from marrying women, to make them stronger men on the battlefield, and how Valentine secretly wedded young couples despite this till a time where he refused to give up his faith in Jesus and was clubbed to death and then beheaded for it. Doesn't sound like what's celebrated for Valentine's Day in our times? Well, who would have thought there was more to it than just flowers and candy? This is why I respect the day's selfless origins, and why I no longer feel need to feel miserable whenever I look to the calendar and mark another year of living only as a single man. There are better things to think about anyway, like writing more character lore and stuff!
Anyhoo! That all said, hope your day was one of happiness and love.
While I would love to, I've got a list of stories that need telling.  Yet I'm still deciding which needs telling first.
Is this for a webcomic? Because if it isn't it you should definitely make a webcomic out of this?
I don't really think I have the skill for that... or enough viewer interest to make it worthwhile.  Thanks for the thought, though.
Could be I read too much Slalvic mythology too much, or simply not knowing the backstory, but the "spirit" on the right side looks like a Rusalka. Amazing how clothes on the female chars highlight the curces of their bodies, but in comparison, male char looks... I don't know, simplified? Atmospheric background looks distant, a bit gloomy, but totally in place.
I'll admit I know little to nothing about Slavic mythology, but anyway... thank you for the kind words.
As for what you said about the guy not being as detailed as the women... in what way? He has similar cloth folds as them, save for an endowed chest like his wife.
Taking a second look I laughed at myself. What I tough was missing was the "curve" - the curve of the female and spirit, specially noticeable below the weistline, is missing at the male character. I have a messed up view of anathomy
And I forgot to mention that shades of blue in water give the whole drawing a nice tone
I think the piece has a beautiful of its own, quite gloom but beautiful.l The monochromatic tones just make the small things stand out. And the little written piece helps to understand a bit more of the feeling of the drawing.
Also thanks for the bit of history. I don't remember if I ever learned that, but if I did it was years ago and I had forgotten the historical meaning of February 14th. Thanks.
Learning the background of the piece really makes it even better.
Well, thank you for the thoughtful comment. Just wanted to say that before all else.
Anyhoo, it's kinda sad to think that when I was attending a private Christian high school, they never once made mention of the true history behind the day. This baffles me because I find it inspiringly spiritual and worthy of remembrance. Something that speaks far more to me than what we're used to, right? I didn't even know a Saint was involved at its heart...
you're quite welcome
yes, the history some holidays -or at least known days- is forgotten in most cases and people just 'celebrate' a commercialized and/or refigured version of its original meaning. The meaning of something should always be known before people jump into celebrating something, but I guess that's just the way it is. So once again thanks for sharing the story, it made people more cultured.
Ha, the idea of me making people more cultured could be the end of the world as we know it in some alternate universes, I'm sure.
And you're right. Reminds me of what a friend of mine told me the other day about this beautiful song that was composed for a game, sung in Swahili. Earned quite some controversy to begin with because of some racial discrimination based on some pathetic reason, and those who fought against the racists eventually changed sides when they found out what the son's lyrics meant in English words. Makes me sad to know that I even share the same world with these people, truly.
Love this piece though, and hope you had a great day too!
A little.
It's moreorless thanks to an ongoing theme I'm working with right now to blend this month's works together, as they're all related storywise. I actually intended to have more colour with this one, though, as I've been subtly adding more details with each new work. The next one should hopefully support this, but it might only be an item illustration anyway...
I was tempted to draw it with vibrant colours, but my current trend demanded one last B&W work before I hopefully return to my normal style.
