Description This illustration was inspired by John Milton's story of Lucifer and his fall from Grace. We see Morningstar as he stands defiantly outside of Heaven's Gates, proudly enduring the change inflicted upon him. He will never know the feeling of angel wings again! But, as he said himself "Better to reign in Hell, than to serve in Heaven."

I decided to start off my Deviant Gallery with the first drawing that I ever created as a Professional Illustrator. I created this piece in 1995, and to this day it hangs in my Studio as an inspiration for my passion for creating Art. I have had many offers to buy the original, but I will never part with this one. It fuels the fire for my Muse and is the cornerstone of the collection of my Work.

Thanks! This illustration is (and will always be) near and dear to my heart. It symbolizes a lot of things to me, the start of my illustration career amoung them, and it still inspires my Muse some 14 years later (yikes I'm getting old!).

wow.. i just love the detail here.. and the slow change from angel to demon

I could gush for pages demanding tutorials off you xD

But i am interested indeed by the choice of change, I had to study Paradise lost books 1 and 2 (i will read the rest some day) and it is different to not see him mutilated fully, and only the steotype (almost) of the demonic wings prevailing.
Many artists see him as a classical warrior due to the nature of the Epic.
Its also great to see his expression, not one of the despair that tugs at his insides, but the arrogance that says 'oh well' to it all.
I too like Hushi am glad to see the humanity that many leave behind.

It is a shame that the bible did mention the fallen angels.. for Milton had to justify gods will to man and helped start the whole demonic fall to hell and fire...
In such a universe of pain, you almost have to feel sorry for he who is then called Satan.. but you have to be reminded he is the cause of sin and often our pain.

It is good, but often upsetting to see the romanticising of the tale, and the blunt 'truth' behind the tale.
It really makes you think sometimes that there isnt much hope..

Anyhoo back to shugary hyperness ^^ i still love the shading *mrawr X3*

Thanks for the great comments! This was my first major illustration and it was full of my passion for angels and fallen angels, specifically the story of The Fall & Lucifer. I'm happy that you see the love I put into it! The original hangs in my studio to help inspire my muse. I do have a Triptych planned (to paint one day) of The Fall that will include the Archangel Michael battling Lucifer. Again, thanks for the comment!

I LOVE YOUR ART!
I have been a fan of this piece since 2001 when I first started surfing the internet and saw this amazing drawing. I want to get it tattooed on me one day.

Aw... thanks! It would be an interesting tatoo for sure. I'm trying to get back to this theme again. I've had an Archangel/Fallen Angel portfolio planned since I created this piece and hope to get that project started after I finish some other paintings I'm working on at the moment.

I adore it. I'm a fan of Lucifer myself. The image that I made into my own icon is part of one of my own depictions of him, which was among the first in my current period of creation. I think we both have been touched by our demon in the original sense, in which demons were inspirational and helped artists, rather than the mistranslated and maligned 'evil beings' that they're misconstrued as these days.

Hurrah Lucifer!

Thanks a bunch for the comments. I love the stories and myths about the archangels and fallen angels, and this was my first foray into that genre.

You're so welcome! I thought it definitely deserved to be commented on, it moved me so much. I'd love to see more of your ideas and perceptions of this particular line of legend and mythology...your art is just so lovely!

Thanks again! Well, since you mention it, I do have plans (for some time now) to create a lot of angel related stuff. I've outlined and sketched out a series called "The Archangels and Fallen Ones" that illustrates 7 Archangels and 6 Fallen. I have two paintings about Lucifer in the works, based on DC's Vertigo character called "A Match Made in Hell" ([link] ) and "Divine Irony" ([link] ). I also have roughs for a triptych painting called "The War for Heaven" that shows the battle between Lucifer and Michael. I also hope to (one day) work on an 8 plate illustration of Dante's Inferno that I outlined.

There is another triptych that I started working on called BELLUM LUCIS ET UMBRAE (The Battle of Light and Shadow) that is an angel/demon battle. The first piece, AB LUCI (From the Light) is up on my website in my Studio ([link] ). I wasn't quite happy with the way the Angel turned out, so I'm going to re-paint it before I move on to the second piece IN UMBRAM (Into the Shadow), the demon.

Hmm... I guess I should post all these sketches in my gallery here on Deviant. It would be nice to see feedback on all my ideas and might help to inspire me to start & finish them. My muse could use the encouragement.

That sounds very nice indeed! I'm not a fan of the Vertigo series so I will refrain from commenting there, but I would like to see the others very much.
