Description I tried a different paper for charcoal work. It's official, IT SUCKS. I couldn't get any kind of good tonal range, regardless of the different pencils and techniques I used. Granted I can say this is because I still am no expert, and yes, I understand I'm 'beating myself up over something stupid', but I'm annoyed.

I think it's pretty decent looking in person, but as soon as I scanned it, the grainy look to the shading became blindingly apparent. So, here's what I'll do. I'll submit this now, because I don't feel like I can make it look any better on paper for scanning. Once I find my stupid tablet pen (yes, I've lost it again) I'll work on this some more and do everything I can possibly dream to it, on the oh-so-fantastic digital canvas that allows so much more freedom. Or something.

Anyways, enough rambling. I used a few different charcoals in an attempt to get the tone range down, but it still lacked in smoothness. Tortillion in some spots, mechanical clicky pencil, qtip for some of that smoother tone that covers his cheeks and some of his head, and a clicky eraser to get some of those lines in there.

Three nights of work (well, mornings, technically), about four hours per night (broken between going on walkthroughs and running various errands). So, total, about twelve hours of effort put into something that I feel needs more work. I'm still satisfied with the time well spent, though... It was a learning experience.

I posted the in-progress image a while back, here it is: Work3 - a. Reference pulled from Maxim; check the in-prog to get more info about that.

Oh well, comments always appreciated. I've vowed (just now) that this type of paper will only be used with strictly mechanical pencil work. I used this type of paper to draw (with mechanical pencil, too) Audrey Hepburn, Sean Connery, and a few pieces like 'They say, the eyes'... along with some of the sketchwork for my more-favorite digital pieces, like Misery Loves Company and In Chains. It just seems that this sketchbook just doesn't like charcoal. (edit, I thought I would point out that other works listed just now, I modified the tonal range some in the darker pieces, but I didn't even want to try tweaking the light/dark balance with this one...)

I'll try another paper next time. I've already got some ideas from co-workers, but they're going to be doozies.

Happy Halloween, everyone.

Gawd, this is amazing work. He looks so real - like I could just reach out and touch him. (And, he's LOOKING at me - a little unnerving.)

Again, wonderful job with the shading. Your ability and attention to detail truly astound me. I can't wait to see more work from you!

something like that happened to me one time in undergrad: we did telephone registration before email registration and I fought and clawed my way for the first year classes I would need (which filled up incredibly fast) and then I hung up without listening to the fact that I had to press 9 to save my schedule...so I hung up and lost ALL Of my schedule choices...when I called back, all my classes were filled up and the line to add classes was busy. I got so pissed, I threw the phone across the room and refused to pick it up and swore that I wouldn't go to undergrad after all, that I'd just sit and rot and maybe I'd apply for the following semester. Luckily, my mom just let me rant, took the phone and my schedule classes and patiently started redailing until by the time she got through, I had calmed down somewhat and got new classes. I'll never forget it: I don't think I've ever been so physically pissed before...

Ales-chan...after zooming to see the so-called graininess, I'm begging you NOT to fix it!! The graininess looks like the pores of the skin & it really adds to the piece! I love the whole texture you have going there, so please don't tweak it! It's totally awesome the way it is!!

I had the tablet in hand yesterday... and I stared, and sighed, and tilted my head to the side, and stared at it some more... and I realized that I just couldn't think of where to start! So I said, "Nevermind," followed by another sigh, and closed photoshop.

Thank you for your comment and fav, Kira-chan. <3

alesyira In reply to asteraascended [2005-11-07 13:04:19 +0000 UTC]

A Color'n'Color collection sketchbook. I tried looking them up online, but they don't seem to sell them anymore. I bought this thing back in the beginning of 04, so... I suppose it's not surprising that the company moved on to bigger or better things. I don't even know what type of paper this is, aside from the brand name, as it wasn't more than a spiral notebook that had blank pages when I bought it....

Full view still not working? I've been having occasional problems with it too, lately. Thought it was just me... :/ I stuck the jpegs into a folder on my site... -> [link] -just if you still wanted a glance.

ttyl!

As always, you talent rocks my socks off! And I think Asmodeus summed it all up pretty well: you are your own worst critic. I think you caught Bruce in a very nice manner, right down to the light shining on his forhead. I see what you mean about the grainy paper - don't worry too much about it. I honestly don't think it takes away from the finished portrait. All around wonderful job, definate fave!

I don't really know what your talking about, regarding the tonal range and stuff, because I'm not an expert in painting.
All that I know is that this really looks like Bruce Willis and that the quality is just amazing, could be a photoshop-filtered photograph to make it look like a sketch.
So you should'nt bother that much, it's really great and maybe there's more life to it because of the paper you've used, maybe it forced you to put even more work into the picture than normally..

Kudos to you.

For a guy he is has a serious aversion to the nutsack! Even I cringed a few times, if they weren't getting shot off they were getting ripped off.

Very eye-opening indeed!

LOL, oops sorry!!!!!

There just seems like there isn't time lately but its my own stupid fault.

I decided to do something original for Chrimbo, so my friend got a Naruto pot, like the Sessy one I painted.

And I took a scene from the 2005 Inu calender and have been painting it on a tray for my other friend, OMG it takes forever!

Why, why did I start it?

D.
