Because artists don't get out much and women who aren't made of plasticine are hard to come by, so they grab comics off their shelf and pretend it's "reference".

BOOM! I'm usually not a fan of the "butt and both boobs in the same shot" pose, but the way you foreshortened the torso makes this look completely natural! Oh...and DAT BOOTIE!!!

If you think it looks natural, try standing in front of a mirror and see how easy it is. >.<
(I'm not commenting to be antagonistic, it's just that you mentioned the boobs'n'butt pose and I just can't agree with you that this version of it works or looks natural.)

You mean like this? Actually, the young lady in the photo is turned more than the elf warrior in the painting, if you look at her shoulders. If you didn't intend your comment to be antagonistic, you failed, because it was extremely antagonistic.

That photo only serves, in my opinion, to emphasize my point. I never said the boobs'n'butt pose is not physically possible, as proved by Senshistock, but the photo highlights how utterly exaggerated and unrealistic the body shape and pose are in this artwork. The waist is impossibly thin, and the left ass cheek is just anatomically dubious at best. The reason I'm bothering to comment on this is because I'm a bit sick of hypersexualization.

I agree completely (we should be friends). If that blog weren't specifically focused on ridiculous anatomy in *published* comics, this would be straight up eschergirls.tumblr.com fodder. It's ridiculous. Sorry for replying to a comment from a year ago but I saw someone's Daily Deviation and then I wanted to see what else they have and then I was like "oh god no ew" and then I was skimming the comments to see if anyone else shared my reaction.

Omg do you seriously believe artists draw *men* as uber-muscular in comics and fantasy for the benefit of *women*? What happened to "girls don't like this stuff"? Seriously though, to put it extremely bluntly, men are muscular in fantasy and comic art because the target audience is male and being muscular is a *male* power fantasy. It has nothing to do with what women find attractive. You're meant to want to be the man, and have sex with the woman. It's a subject versus object thing. The two aren't remotely equivalent.
Yes, exaggeration is fun, dynamic compositions are fun. But the way it's done with women is pushed beyond all logic to the point where it's at the expense of characterisation, storytelling, and comic aesthetics. How can you even tell from a female fantasy character's or superheroine's outfit whether she's into looking sexy and showing off her assets or if she's shy in personality when they all dress the exact same? How can you expect an artist to be able to show things like emotions and worldbuilding if (in the comic medium, which is largely where this disease has spread from) every other panel focuses on boobs or buttcheeks?
And please let go of the tired 'if you don't like it do it better yourself' dismissal. If fixing misogyny in fantasy and scifi and comic art communities were as easy as getting women in there, we'd be there already.

The reason that I'm bothering to respond is that I'm a bit sick of people complaining about hypersexualization. Of course it's exaggerated, and I don't think that this particular artist is striving for realism. If, in this beautiful and technically astounding painting, the only things you can concentrate on are her waist and butt...well, I think that has more to do with your own hang-ups than the actual artwork.

Kaytara In reply to GavinMichelli [2014-12-15 14:35:53 +0000 UTC]
Hypersexualization is a problem because it's as the result of shit like this that women can't escape being judged by our looks no matter if we're employed in fashion, teaching, or astrophysics. It's not one artist, it's a whole culture. And if you're sick of people complaining of hypersexualisation.. well, you don't see giant crotches and camera angles emphasising crotch shots in every tv movie commercial you see, so suck it up.

GavinMichelli In reply to Kaytara [2014-12-15 15:55:30 +0000 UTC]
I don't see giant vaginas in every tv show and commercial either, so I don't think I'll be sucking anything up anytime soon. If you have a problem with the "whole culture" (as you put it), you would do better to try and change it by example, instead of talking shit on another artist's work.
