Description Persephone was the beautiful daughter of Demeter, goddess of the earth, or as some people call her, Mother Earth. Hades, who was Zeus's brother and lord of the underworld, fell in love with the beautiful Persephone. One day while picking flowers, Persephone was kidnapped and taken against her will into the underworld to become Hades' wife.
Demeter searched for days for her daughter, and none of the gods or goddesses knew where she was either. Mourning the loss of her daughter, Demeter would not allow anything to grow on the earth. Flowers withered, crops died, even the nectars of the gods would not come forth.
Finally Zeus had to do something. He ordered Hades to return Persephone to her mother. Hades agreed, but before he let her go, he forced her to swallow a pomegranate seed.
Once at the surface, Demeter was overjoyed that her daughter had returned. But when she discovered that Persephone had swallowed the seed, her heart broke. Because to eat something of the underworld binds you there, and Persephone had to return.
Zeus could not allow the earth to be barren forever, so he compromised with Hades that Persephone must spend one-third of the year in the underworld and the other two-thirds with her mother.
During the time Persephone is away, Demeter becomes sad again and a coldness wraps the earth. This time of the year is winter, and when Persephone returns to the surface, Demeter allows the world to come alive again.

This is the painting I did when sitting in the placa del gotico. It's not really that great of a painting, but it was an enjoyable experience even if it did smell like piss.
As always, any critique is much appreciated!
Watercolour,2005.

Well I think previous comments have said everything I could say, so I'll just say that I think it's a really nice painting, and that I really like the monochrome and green. Works very nicely together. Great story, and a great picture to portray it....

Good work here, especially the last vestiges of green in her hair and what looks like a shroud. It's as though she bears with her subtle reminders of the fruits of Demetre's bounty to keep her company in the depths. She doesn't look particularly sad, more resigned to her fate.

This is an absolutely gorgeous painting and the story of Persephone is one of my favorites. There is another version, however. One that i learned from my feminist Dianic Wiccan teachers long ago that does not include Hades....Instead it incorporates the Crone as the one who takes Persephone and keeps her for the months when Demeter allows winter to come to the earth.....i am not sure where you can find the story.....

Probably, it can be found quite easily on google.

Anyway.....the color scheme is excellent in this. The way you have painted her hood to look a little like a cave formation or a honeycomb is so perfect. At least that is what i see in it. Your work is so thought provoking.

I know that story too - because Demeter became the new mother earth I believe, but the old Crone was the original. At least I think that's how it goes. I'll look it up some day when I have more time. Thanks for the insight!

hee hee - I'm glad you like the hood and the colours. You think it's thought-provoking? Thank you so much! That's a really nice thing to say.

It is so cool that you know that story, too.

And yes...thought provoking because it makes her look a little like she is dying, as if being there is sapping her will to live for a little while. A kind of rebirth perhaps, for the young persephone.

ya I sorta fixed it, but I have to hit it very hard for it to register a space. Which is bad because I have to transcribe things for work soon
