-----------------------

While Spain has been involved in a European war, the Dutch war, since 1674, Brazil attacks Upper Peru in May 1676.

The Spanish army (10,000 men at start) defending the colony is aware of its inferiority. It will therefore do everything to avoid a big frontal battle and be content to defend the fortifications while attacking the rear of the Brazilians.

So if the small town of Santa Cruz is conquered in December 1676, it will be necessary to wait two years to take Characas, in January 1679, after 6 months of siege. Potosi will be taken the following year, in January 1680.

It was necessary to bring 80,000 men from Brazil (20,000 of whom died) to Upper Peru to win against the 16,000 Spaniards. The crown finds itself indebted to 14 million LT, almost four times its annual income.

In Europe the war is over and the bloodless Spaniards must ask for help from the Dutch. They are particularly worried about the rising power of Brazil and believe that it must be stopped.

A large Spanish-Dutch expedition was mounted with 90 ships and 24,000 men.
It easily took Buenos Aires in November 1679 but had to besiege Argentina for three months to take it, which gave precious respite to the Brazilians.
The arrival of the Dutch "heretics" allows Conan I to mobilize the militia (and introduce conscription) in a quasi-holy war. He gathered troops and repelled the Hispano-Dutch at the Battle of Lambaré on July 25, 1680.

The exhausted belligerents concluded a truce in 1681.
