-----------------------

Jean II renounces any new action against Conan but does not recognize him for all that.
He had a small fort built in Morlaix du Sud and developed the colony which took the name of Comté de Maragnan.

In 12 years, he brought in 2,000 settlers, including 400 Norman and Aquitaine Huguenots (French Protestants).
The sugar economy developed and in 1562 the colony had 1600 whites, 1400 mestizos and 2000 Indians, i.e. 5000 inhabitants.

For his part, Conan diversifies its economy by developing extensive farming. This allows more land to be cleared and controlled while still having a large number of mounted militiamen. It thus extends the strategic depth of its domain.

In March 1562 the first war of religion broke out in France. The Portuguese take advantage of this to attack the Bretons of Maragnan. The pretext is to hunt down the Huguenots.
In November 1562 they mobilized 1800 men and attacked Morlaix du Sud which was defended by 100 soldiers and 500 militiamen. The assault is settled in 5 days. But settlers flee to the hinterland where they continue to resist.

Conan, who considers that this colony belongs to him, mobilizes 2000 men and advances to the south bank of the Saint Francis River. The conflict risks degenerating into open war and Portugal cannot support two fronts.

The Portuguese governor is forced to negotiate with Conan: he cedes the right bank of the Saint Francis River in exchange for the colony of Maragnan: Recife agreement of March 5, 1563.

Jean II will try to take back Maragnan by carrying out several raids. However, he failed to obtain royal support. In 1570 the last Bretons were defeated at Maragnan. The conflict cost Portugal dearly while Conan strengthened his positions.
