Description A group ID contest submission entry for Wow, how amazing, Amber drew Draco Malfoy. AGAIN. Blah. Just blah.

I'm sure it won't win since I did it literally in a three hour sitting last night, till about 1:30 am. For some reason nobody is ever online anymore when I am, so I've been drawing before bedtime But heck, might as well try.

Pencils, ball point pen, markers, watercolor.

Draco is (c0 JK Rowling, and yes, there is a *touch* of Tom Felton in this portrait. But per usual, I elongated his features and made his eyes paler, ala the book/canon Draco.

Yes, that's a noose around his neck, while he sneers unknowingly at the world. You do the math on the symbolism.

Hey! I know where that picture came from! You know what is great about you? You are developing a style. I knew this drawing was yours from the thumbnail. You have a sketchy/craziness about your lines that is really intriguing. I am looking forward to seeing your work in the future.

By the way, don't be real suprised if a drawing of mine pops up from the same photo reference you took yours from. I've already started on it..

Thank you so much! Yes, actually it's been very difficult to balance an attempt to adhere to academic standards of good art yet to deliberately branch from photorealism and add expressionistic tones to my work. This can be particularly challenging in fanart like this, I think, with a broad fanbase, each member of which has their own "correct" interpretation of characters, hehe. I'm constantly having to stave off folks who think my Draco or Lupin or whomever is "wrong" not because of how I've DRAWN them, but because of how I actually depict their likenesses. For me it's a free for all and a worthwhile struggle. I LOOK FORWARD HUGELY to seeing your rendition of this shot. Gotta love those publicity pics they're releasing now, neh? XD

You are AMAZING! With your colors, and your symbolism, and your incredible talent. Im honestly blown away even more with every piece you do! So what if you chose the same subject a lot, you explore it in a different way everytime that makes it wonderfully refreshing! This is simply gorgeous if you ask me!

I love the background light in this. the colors and the circular feel... it makes me think of Van Gough portraits for some reason. lol. What I really appreciate about this, though, is that you aren't afraid to make Draco look like the sneering little bastard that he is most of the time. I generally stick to hateful glares and moments of weekness because I don't like seeing Draco be the ugly little snot Malfoy. I can't believe you did this that late at night. By 9 pm Im usually done! Not only did you draw something well at that hour, but you had the peace of mind to actually give it meaning!

Its been decided, I have to try out this whole mixed media, loads of color, textured thing... just for fun... because (when done as well as you do it) it looks incredible!

Can't wait to see more art from you, HP or not!

Dani

AmberPalette In reply to Citylove05 [2005-10-16 02:37:52 +0000 UTC]

GOD, Dani, you always make my DAY, lol! Thanks for always giving such thoughtful answers!!!

Regarding things you specifically said abou this piece:

--Van Gogh-ishness, lol. Ole Vincent is probably my all time favorite artist, because I have like this fetish for markmaking and crosshatching, as well as pure intense color, and guess what, this guy figures out how to intersect them BOTH, so hell yeah, I allow some of his technique to seep into my compositions

--Showing ALL sides of Draco. I have seen Draco fans get all kinds of criticism for only drawing his likeable characteristics: his bold frankness (a sort of snotty kind of bravery if you ask me), his fierce devotion to a cause and to his family (even if both are utterly corrupt), his tenacity...or they show him in the very plausible and, I believe, true situations of extreme abuse and pressure to be perfect forced on him by his father and the Death Eating community in general. Fair enough, I draw all those things most frequently too. BUT...I think it's VERY important to keep it real with a kid like Draco. He is hurting and bitter and confused, yes, and there are very loveable and redeeming things about him, but he is also an elitist, a bigot, and a brat. He takes the horrible things done to him and flings all the resultant bitterness and jealousy and anger on innocent bystanders, with little or no compunction. There is a great deal of psychological complexity to Draco to which I believe I can only do justice if I am HONEST with myself about BOTH his good AND BAD sides.

SO yes... YES...I prefer to show him the way you prefer to show him.....but at the same time, even though I kinda hate doing it, I have to consider the things that make him antagonistic in the books, too. I absolutely adore him, but my conscience reminds me that there are times when yes, he's an utter GIT, lol.

Had to reply to that because it's a fascinating topic. Fans really can get carried awaywith their interpretations of the HP folks and I just feel like I have to stay true to Rowling/canon, even tho I throw in a twist of my own here and there. Don't you feel it's frustrating how big the fandom is sometimes?

Anyway love chatting with you, as always ^^

*squeels*

OH WOW! What a comment! lol. First, thanks taking the time to reply. Second, THANK YOU for taking the time to reply like THAT.

I've been a fan of Van Gogh since I was little. I used to flip through this huge book that had his letters to his brother and his art (sketches, ink drawings, parisian posters, and paintings) all in one. I would spend hours looking at it, so to find someone like you who takes his work at gives it a new twist and uses it in a new way, is absolutely wonderful!

I love hearing your thoughts about Draco. Honestly, I know that I chicken out and slip into the fandom safe zone of "gorgeous Draco" and such. I really admire you guts and your talent. So cheers to you!

Thank you!!!! No, intellectual/artistic discussion makes my day XD So I'm indulging myself, not doing favors hehe. Hooray for van Gogh flipbooks! And no, I love your Draco art. The one of him under the tree with the leaf is so incredibly poignant. I actually think that snarky Draco is as overdone as angsty Draco. Either is valid, you just have do do it right...and you did!

Very nice use of colour and symbolism. I don't want to say too much cause this is just your fan work. Although in my eyes, everything is valuable as it provides an opportunity to practice skills. I see you have spent some time on this, and it's nice to see. What I mean is that it's just that, time. Time spent drawing what you love, thus it is time well spent. Sure you could paint this incrediblely elaborate picture full of symbolism to state a political opinion or view, and yes that would be amazing..but you can do the same with something that you love. Portray someone's character and still get across a powerful image.

Yes I'm sounding redudant.

Anyway, I'm glad to see you are knocking back a few more pics and taking some quality time from homework and the stresses of grad school and life. In the end, art is expression, but there should also be some enjoyment as well.

**sighs**

Ok.. yes.. I shall disappear now for a bit.

**poof**

Oh blah, you're too kind. I only spent three hours on this picture, so there is like a range of a thousand things I hate about it and would fix were I given a week or two for it. But thank you very much.

And just so you know, I know I constantly rail on about how my fanwork is just an exercise of destressing and enjoyment and not really serious, but if you ever want to discuss the content or even critique it, go ahead. I just tell people not to bother because these are works I'll never return to or refine, because they are hobby material that, if there were no DeviantArt, I'd probably never bother to show to anyone. But don't feel like I'm going THOU SHALT NOT COMMENT ever, coz...yay comments. ^^

Again...thanks for being supportive about the artwork I'm cranking out these days. It's nice that someone isn't being uptight and telling me i need to do more serious stuff...since my serious stuff these days is written essays in art history grad school stuff.

I'm sorry I can't say more right now, but I'm in a mondo (heh, that word just sounds freaking gay to me these days) hurry. I wish you weren't so hard on yourself.

AmberPalette In reply to Shychick [2005-10-15 20:38:56 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I didn't mean to sound hard on myself Grad school destroys all self confidence, I've learned....but I try to stay uh...reasonably satisfied with my own performance ^^ I sometimes get flack for focusing on one character exclusively for several months at a time, and I've gotten even BIGGER flack this time around for doing a character who isn't all that popular with the fandom. It's funny because I always had this opinion of Draco as having a sympathetic side, but then everyone else suddenly jumped on the bandwagon from July through around September and just suddenly adored him....but now that fad has gone out and it's sofreaking cool to bash the character again. Which makes me laugh, because for Chrissake people, he's NOT REAL, and you're all so SHALLOW about him anyway...gah. You know what I mean? Drives me nuts how people get so rabid about fanart. I mean I don't have time to do my serious original stuff right now, nor the studio space, so I do tiny (this is REALLY small drawing actually) pics of HP and stuff. Blah. Shutting up now, I'm just in a brooding misanthrope mood because of all my homework.....

And thank you. For supporting and understanding
