Manikes was likely the most illustrious and sucessful (non-Emperor)commander of the closing years of Macedonian dynasty era.In his role of the general his only failures were basically those of others and of theintriguing court back in Constantinople.

Very nice depiction of him! It is possible that, had he not died at the battle near Amphipoli (which he won) and had actually managed to claim the throne, Matzikert might have never happened. That said, he was brutal! He actually suffocated some guy who seduced his wife by stuffing his nostrils and mouth with excrement!
