Description I finished this one a little while ago, and am pretty happy with the way it turned out. Was trying something a little different this time

... Wait, this cant be right... I never thought I'd get a DD. Ever. And I've only just begun basket weaving. I have no idea what I'm doing yet; every piece is an experiment still...
... Aw, if I had known, I'd have taken better pictures, and arranged things more... artfully for you guys...

And yes, it's completely made of pine needles and artificial sinew (basically heavy waxed dental floss). I broke a few heavy sewing needles in the process too.

~edit: I made a lid for it, and it ended up selling for $120

and if any of you are interested in seeing more... [link] and [link] are some of the different shapes I've played with.

Unfortunately, that one's long gone. I ended up selling it to a good friend for around $120.

Haha, you'd have to find some teeny pine cones in order for it to look bountiful, though It wasn't much more than maybe four inches across, at its widest. Β It'd be great for pocketchangeΒ or little rocks, though!

If you're really interested, I've got a slightly smaller one (9-12 hour) with a slightly different spiral pattern (I don't think I've posted pictures of it, though). It's a sort of warm caramel-brown color, stands at about three and a half inches in diameter, and maybe two and a half inches high. I can make an effort to post it if you'd like -it's just been sitting on the edge of my bookshelf, and guarding my sewing pins.Β
If that sounds like something you'd be looking for, I'd be asking for ~$100 plus about $7 priority mail flatrate shipping (within the US) for that one I'd have to double-check the rates for out-of-country, and overseas shipping.Β

--Or I can point you toward a few resources so that you can make your own! The starting materials are super cheap, and the rest just takes time. lots and lots of time

No worries either way! Β
Here's a pretty clear tutorial that gives you the general gist of it:Β interactive.knowitall.org/inte…
It'll take some playing with, but if you run into any majorΒ sticky-spots, don't be afraid to drop me a comment or note, or something

I have to say, I am glad to see you sold it for $120! That $25 in the image is WAY TOO LOW! It is a very pretty basket. This is something I want to learn more about, I took an intro class many years ago, even have a book on pine needle basketry. Just haven't done anything with it (I do a lot of beadwork).

Thank you very much! I'm glad so many people are liking these things, and think my work is worth a lot more than I initially thought! When I made this one, I had no idea what I ought to charge, so I ended up browsing eBay, and averaging relative prices for pine baskets around that size. Guess that wasn't a very good idea, haha.
I'd definitely like to learn a bit more about it too -been keepin' an eye out for a class to crop up in my area, but for the time being, fiddling with stuff is teaching me a lot. Did you ever finish any pieces from your class? or was it mostly just technique/pattern stuff? If ypu ever get back into it, I'd love to see what you come up with!
Beadwork is tough! Lots of pattern-remembering, and bead-losing, and stuff (from what I remember of the little I've done)

Hey don't you think $25 is a bit too low for a basket like this? I mean, $2.50/hour? I'd sell this somewhere around $100 at least... Keep up the good work though!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Arboris-Silvestre In reply to Yanikyle [2012-08-12 02:41:52 +0000 UTC]

Glad you like it! haha I never figured I'd get anything close to minimum wage off any craft, really. Hardly anyone does (well, unless they're famous) because it's really not economical for the buyer. I dont really live in a luxury neighborhood, so I tend to price things reasonably so people can afford to get something nice without blowing a whole paycheck . Haha, it's really not much bigger than a large orange, so I'd feel kinda awkward pricing it that high anyway, considering the materials are pretty darn cheap
Although if people wanna pay more for my work... I've got no objections, haha

Yanikyle In reply to Arboris-Silvestre [2012-08-12 10:43:35 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I hear you. It's hard to put a price to something you do but on the long run the faster you learn to do it easier it gets. People tend to undervalue their craft, no matter what it is. But as long as both sides are happy, I guess there's no harm done, right?

Arboris-Silvestre In reply to nightchild01 [2012-07-27 16:59:22 +0000 UTC]

I'm sure you could! A lot of people make em out of yarn and embroidery thread, which is cheaper, easier, and -usually- allergy free . Plus the finished product is really soft.

I have to agree with some other commenters; charging barely $2.50 an hour for this kind of work is a total disservice. Something handmade with obvious quality like this should be in the $100-150 range easy.

It can be really hard to price work, so I totally sympathize. Generally I'd say you should at least get minimum wage x hours put in for any work. I mean, if you can make $7/hr flipping burgers, you should definitely get that or more for skilled work like art.

devidoggy87 [2012-07-20 06:20:50 +0000 UTC]

Arboris-Silvestre In reply to devidoggy87 [2012-07-20 06:39:21 +0000 UTC]

I was sort of testing the waters with the price, to see whether something like that would be do-able for the potential consumer, and all of a sudden, I got a TON of really great feedback! I'm really glad so many people think it's worth way more than I had initially thought! I know I'll probably never get minimum wage out of it, but I definitely feel much better about pricing things a little higher now!
