Description Inspired by one of the old choir songs, 'Cloths of Heaven'. My favorite part is 'Tread softly.. softly.. you tread on my dreams'. I love the delicate, wistfulness of it, and hope to do something like that here.

Gift art for Jasmine's (choir friend) birthday on 16 October. The finished version with the background was quite hard to scan because of the light tones, so I used the WIP version instead. I love the subtle highlights though.

I only had a week to complete this, so it might look .. less polished. I like the brighter colors but my perfectionist self screams for 20 layer work. Although most people don't notice it but for my older illustrations I rely heavily on many thin layers of color before coming up with the final colors. Nowadays I'm a bit lazy so I use a more solid coloring style. Especially with markers.

Acrylics, Copic markers, ballpoint and pencil.

Dreams

Colorful oceans of light
Waves surrounding me
No matter if day or night
Colors and light, it's all I see.

organic
breathing me in and out
I close my eyes
and feel the embrace of water
smooth like the surface of glass
the waves are wispering tenderly melodies...

Thanks for sharing the lovely poem, it does capture what I was looking for - gentle, dreamy and just soaking in the colors. Usually feel very peaceful when I draw/color something like this.

This does look great though it's hard to tell what I'm looking at. I do like the design however. Very nice.

Okay, so I must've been really thinking about what to say about this work, because I was surprised not to find my comment here and thought "I did leave a comment, I said this and that.." That happens sometimes when I think about a certain pic and then forget to write it.
I don't remember what I thought at first anymore, but what else can I say about this work, except that I love it!?
I mean, I like this particular style of yours very much. And even if right now you're trying to do something diffrent (which is a good thing to do), I still love it.

It's dynamic and has it's own rythm. I like the way you put the back in the centre, the way you did the soft shading on it, and especially it's movement. I think the curve adds a certain intensity, that i associate with the wistfulness you were talking about.

Ah, it really needs no words, it's simply an emotional and pretty to look at thing. It's sad that the scanner ruined the finished pic and we couldn't see it.
And layer work is nice, but sometimes single layers can be more expressive and dynamic, it all depends on the objective

Hmm, that happens to me sometimes. Would be nice to take some time to think of something to say, haha.

I've always liked back views, been wanting to try something like that for some time.Wanted to create a fresh , youthful feeling, especially since it was my friend's 18th birthday. It's a bit like breaking out of a shell or something as she transits towards adulthood. She's into art stuff as well. Although she can be an introvert, I find that she has a very.. colorful character, that doesn't really show when you first meet her. It's strange but even though I didn't start with that in mind but once I have someone in mind my impression of the person will just leak into it, like some visual character analysis.

Hmm, could you elaborate more about the 'emotional' part? I've heard of it a few times but I don't really get it.

O__o err, okay, so I found this unanswered comment-question in the heaps of other unanswered comments and deviations that have been recently piling up in my message centre! I don't understand how I could've missed it, weird. But, oh well, I felt I had to answer even if you asked me ages ago sorry.

I didn't realize I've been using the word emotional often and not making myself clear. I mean it in a sense -evoking emotions in the viewer- maybe. In a sense that it's not just a piece of nicely drawn lines and colours that seems to stand good together, it's a drawing or painting that makes you feel something, although sometimes it's difficult to explain what, but it just "gets to your heart"
I think that's just it.

Hmm, for the emotional part, I usually feel it more acutely when I'm looking at someone else's work. For my own drawings etc, I usually feel more emotional during the process and don't really feel anything after I finish it.

Thanks for clarifying though.

ahh yes.. I SEE IT! its like those eye illusion games aint it? and u used copic in it? wow... since u live in singapore... i was wondering if u know where to buy cheap copic markers? or are they all standard? and wad colors do u recomend i should have? do u need alot of colors to make great work?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

arlejerlutos In reply to havockid [2006-11-08 13:00:15 +0000 UTC]

Haha, no lah. >.< It's very weird sometimes, because I can see it very clearly right from the beginning. And when I can't see anything people tell me about all the things they could see (but I can't).

Cheap copic markers? Go to the art shop called Straits at North Bridge Shopping Centre (the black building opposite Bras Basah Complex, nearest MRT stations are City Hall or Bugis). They sell copic markers there for $5.50 each without student discount.

Hmm as for marker colors, it depends on how you color. I tend to mix watercolor pencils with markers, so I would recommend base colors like cool gray no.2 (C2) , lilac (V04S), warm gray no.4 (W4) , pale blue (b32), carmine (R37S), canary yellow or acid yellow..Just buy the normal marker ones (kinda squarish at the ends).

You don't need a lot of colors because if you understand color theory you can mix your own colors with only about 3-10 colors. Sometimes it's also about using the right colors to create a certain mood.. my work used to be very colorful but they felt about the same after a while because too many colors can be quite distracting. Even black and white work can be beautiful in it's own way, or a painting made up mainly of blues. Try doing different pieces with a different main color - maybe red, blue, green, purple, yellow, orange, etc . It's not so much about how many colors a work needs in order to be good, but how the colors are used to convey what the artist wants.

wow... helll ur gonna b my art mentor(singapore version) lol *oh holly art supply knower* LOL
ermm... but about the colors.. i dun really do abstract stuff like u... so i dunno if ur stuff works for me, cuz i tend to color people and stuff more often, and i have a touch brand twin marker tat i bought from china... its cheap... but im not sure if it works wif copic.....

and is it best to like buy pale colors and work up the layer? and use... the blender to lighten? and use grey to darken?... i dunno..>< shhots... my color are hell saturated and bright... maybe too bright... garh

Hmm, the color mixing concept is the same, just that I like to mix color pencils with markers and paint.

I'm not sure about your marker set, but it would be good to check if it's oil based (the thick, permanent type) or alcohol based (a bit more watery). If it's alcohol based , mixing copics would be okay.

If you like bright colors, it would be better to get a mix of pale and medium dark colors for layering. The blender only helps to blend color most of the time, and if you only use markers you don't really need it (since marker inks are naturally soluble). If you want to build up a gradient effect just use a few layers with the colored markers. Gray is more like for adjusting the tones... to make them more neutral. I won't recommend using them too often because they can make colors dull.

For color mixing experiments, I'd recommending buying 6 tubes of poster paint (2 types of blues, 2 types of reds, 2 types of yellow, white and black) . They're cheaper and easier to use because you're using the primary colors. It's easier to mix colors if you understand their properties and what makes up different colors. So when you get back to using markers you can get whatever colors you want using different combinations.

Hmm, maybe your markers are too opaque. It's quite hard to do layering or blender with that. And it might stain the blender nib too.

Haha, it's good that you know a bit about color mixing. >.< When I first started using markers I kept buying colors that were similar to what I wanted but it was a mess because I didn't know how to mix the colors properly.

It depends on how you layer.. if you like to use a lot of layers it would be better to choose lighter, less opaque colors. It's a bit like paint sometimes, because some colors are more opaque than others.

You can draw a few lines in black pen and go over parts of the line with the marker. If the marker ink covers the line, it's opaque. If it doesn't, or only partially covers the line, it's transparent (something like highlighters).

To be honest, a better alternative for blenders is denatured alcohol (antiseptic). You can buy them in bottles from any pharmacy, spray them on tissue paper, cotton buds (to control the blending area) or directly onto the paper. It's much cheaper than blender markers and easier to use.
