Description Characters, but not scene, from the book Shahly's Quest by Rich Knoll....but she may be too horse like in body and not enough deer like

11x14 ink, shades of gray and black
would have done it in prismacolor but time was an issue, really needed to get a drawing finished and this does capture detail better

Nice composition, and I like the playfulness of the scene

I wish I knew more about horse anantomy to comment on the shoulder thing, but it works for me as is...

thanks, I really need to look that one up...I remember my grandfather's pony lying down but don't have a clear image....but I don't think it's wrong, actually....his shoulder's are slightly viewed from behind and above which might be giving it an odd feel to it

Other than the details of the unicorns (of course), I really wanted to point out that I love your use of white space!! It was also good to see something new of yours on here! Yay for conquering artists' block!

Thanks for mentioning the white/negtive space Holly. It can be such a powerful sweet element in a drawing. And it's one thing that a lot of artists, especially young artists just don't use. It can become like another object and another force of movement in a picture, but like harmony in a musical composition you might not ever realize what all is there.

I couldn't remember the phrase, "negative space", for the life of me... I just knew it worked well in the composition.

well, on some of my drawings it does jump out at you as white space, LOL

Cute scene. The only thing I would have to critique is Vinton (I presume that's the one sleeping?). He looks like he's really not lying down at all...I think it has to do with the shoulders. But I really don't know much about anatomy...so yeah. c:

Everything else is splenderific!
That's a mix between splendid and teriffic!

For those who don't know the story, this one picture sums up Shahly's mischievous personality. Sandi has a gift for taking a creature like a unicorn--especially Shahly--and giving her emotion and personality in a few lines of drawing. I've seen copious artwork with unicorns, but only Sandi's tells you what the unicorn is thinking and feeling.

Sum it up? SHAHLY'S STAND, you can see she's terrified. TWO HEARTS, you can see two unicorns who are very much in love, and the affection in Shahly's expression is clear and priceless. Now, you can see a little scamp about to rudely wake up her stallion, you can see the anticipation on her face and she's braced for flight as soon as he opens his eyes.

Of this picture I can only say, FANTASTIC WORK, SANDI!

AGAIN!

Thanks Rich, Shahly is indeed, a brave, mischievious little thing and quite fun to work with. It really is fun to create expression and personality on an equine face. I find myself making the same facial expressions that I'm working on drawing... So glad you liked it. I'm looking forward to the next ones.
