I agree. I love characters with flaws, it truly makes them unique and atleast relatable. That is why I like the villains better, yes they are super evil but they have that backstory which makes me sympathise with some of them and I don't know, they are simply more interesting and the character has much more depth. And even the look, if they made superman less muscly, more normal then atleast he would be somewhat understandable.

It's because he can do everything it makes him more unique and compelling. Read ALL STAR SUPERMAN. Superman is the compass that we all should act like and inspire to be.

It's the authors' fault. If Batman had remained as in his first versions he'd be worse than Spiderman. They evolved the character for today's tastes and so they should do with Supes.

Superman is more of an icon than a character now, so maybe he's suffering from the same thing Mickey Mouse is (although the new Mickey Mouse shorts bring a little character back).

He's mishandled alot. It's a shame because since he potentially can do anything he should have the best stories...but writers are lazy and Supes suffers for it. Nice pic, something DC should see.

OHGODOHGODOHGODOHGODOHGOD I love this. There are no words for me to describe how much I love this. (But watch me trip over myself trying anyway.) I think my reaction is the exact opposite you were going for, but...gah...let me just try. So I know what you mean about the uncertainty, and I think that wouldn't get my goat so much if they didn't ALWAYS clothe it with so much goddamn self-righteous "good guy" bullshit.
My favorite Superman of all time is and will forever be Dean Cain because he embodied this cock-sure, all-powerful guy that KNEW he was the hottest thing since Harrison Ford. And yet, there was this vulnerability to him...not in his uncertainty, but his inability to actually be ALL POWERFUL. Which is just the feeling I get with from this picture.
'Cause the thing with Clark/Superman/whatever is that he has the best powers. He should be able to do anything, but the catch is that he can't do EVERYTHING and so he's caught in this place where everyone expects everything from him and sometimes he listens and starts expecting that of himself. Which, you know, would kill anyone...much less a guy already struggling with abandonment issues, isolation anxiety, and identity crises up the the wahzoo.
So...idk...I probably just made an idiot of myself but oh well. xD I think this painting is really powerful and I love it. *SLAMS DOWN HARD ON FAVORITES BUTTON*

Yeah, I think I like the sound of that Superman better. Let the vulnerability be a real thing rather than "I have to fill in the 'make him relatable' box" type of answer.

Totally. xD The show itself was pretty cheesy and filled with 90's campy goodness, but I think I love it so much because, unlike lots of Superhero shows, what grounds the universe are the characters because they're just really well written. It takes a lot of skill to create larger-than-life people and still manage to make them real. The difference is fictional truth versus real truth which is where SO MANY WRITERS go wrong, I think. I would totally be a whiny bitch if I was in Superman's shoes, no doubt. But I don't want read/watch/hear about a whiny bitch who has awesome powers of epicness. I wanna hear about someone that kicks ass when he has to, but at the end of the day reminds me of the people I love. Sorry /babbling and fangirling all over the place
This pic just gives me so much feels. D8 (fuck you, grammar!) So yeah. I really love this. xD

Yeah, I agree. But there are some good portrayals of the character too. The Animated Series is the best so far I think.

Oh aye. It kept all his powers, but none of them were so powerful that he was unable to be physically challenged. What's more, he was still a confident and heroic character, sure of his actions and filled with purpose. Good version.

The way I would make Clark Kent is that I would him make less buff and athletic looking than say Batman or the Green Arrow, not to say he would be fat and out of shape but when compared to say two guys who actually have to work out nearly every hour of every day he would just look average. Also as Superman, he would wear a muscle suit to make him a little more imposing and a little less like Clark. Another big change I would make to Clark is that he is Clark Kent dressed up like Superman, instead of Superman disguised as Clark Kent. This would separate him from Batman who has dedicated his entire life to being Batman, so much so that even when he is not Batman he is still Batman while Clark is only Superman because he has these powers and really lacks the drive and obsession Batman has.

I agree. My favorite versions of Superman are either the big, bold, really naive and jolly guy who always wants to help out (Seinfeld and Superman's version as voice-acted by Patrick Warburton is the epitome here), or one with far less power who WILL still be severely hurt by a cruise missile to the face (Action Comics #1 Superman, both new and old, and/or Superman: TAS fits the bill here).

Its already been said twice, but bears repeating. Check out All Star Superman by Grant Morrisson and Frank Quietly, quite possibly the best Superman story ever told.

Comments like that irritate me. I respectfully disagree. Superman is very compelling, but he doesn't wear his angst as obviously as Batman, and vengance isn't his motivator. Writers often don't know what to do with Superman, as they feel similarly to you. Most just don't know where Superman's limits are--is he limitless or is it only a matter of "green rocks" being the only thing that can slow him down. There is an emotional content to Superman which is also often overlooked, and I don't mean anything as simple as WB's "Lana or Lois" take. I am frustrated with uncertainty in any character as well, as a certain amount may be expected so that the reader can identify, but too much makes you wonder why you are even bothering. Superman is a hero--he's my hero. He's more than just a strong man that can do everything. He's a modern myth. He's an icon. He's something to which we aspire, even if reality will mean we fall entirely short of what fantasy will accomplish.
I like the artwork.
