Description The sun has already started her way down to the horizon when the old man couldn't get any further. He was on the way all the days and now it was time for him to recover from all the strains of his long journey. He found a good place under the protective arms of an old tree. The sun sent some warming rays through the trees leafage to him ... and the old man was feeling safe for the first time since his journey has started.

Again I lost a lot of time for coloring this piece over the weeks. But now it is completed. I colored it during a great painting session together with yaamas while hearing and getting lost in stories from Narnia. Later on I did some experimenting and finishing work on the sun rays using gesso for the first time.

Wow, I like it. I'm so glad to see you changed it to make it more dynamic and interesting. I like the end result. The colour is great and the lighting is nice. You know if you are trying to get those effects with watercolours and inks, look at people like Alan Lee (watercolours) and John Howe (watercolours and inks). They achieve great tonal and light qualities. I highly recommend John Howe's Forging Dragons book that just came out. [link]

Man ... thanks for that hints! I know Alan Lee's work ... but I haven't noticed so far the work of John Howe ... I will definitely take a look at it!

By the way, I really appreciate the great conversation with you!

No problem man. We have to stick together. Art's a very hard thing to keep up and I need you and everyone else here just as much. Your work is very nice and unique. I can't wait to see where you're headed in the future. You have a good grasp of composition, drama, perspective. You can only get better. I can't wait. I have been making a lot of new stuff. Unfortunately, it's nothing I can put up here. I have been working on a gaming book, a monster manual, that hasn't been published yet. When it is I can put the stuff up. In the mean time my personal stuff will be as I can work on it.

Dude, this is sick! I must use it for one of my tracks non-commercially. Is that ok? I will give you credit for the image and URL for your profile if you like, too. If so/not (or if you want payment of some sort when I make no money), let me know via email at spinal.destination@gmail.com and I will keep it or replace it with something else depending on circumstances.

Wow, I think I must use the'b' word again : Beautiful piece of work!
I love the way your pictures are accompanied by a story ^^ The tree looks amazing, and the ray of light really gives life to the scene. Great work!

And by the way, may the "journey" be life? Then... the only time that you feel safe is when you have the true certainty of something, even if it is that the journey is over.
heheh, well, it *is* an inspiring piece of art

Many thanks! And I think your way of interpretation leads you into the right direction ... the old man is obviously at the near end of his life journey, and so this painting could show the moment when he had found the peace to rest ... and only the sun is accompanying him on his last way ...

As well it is great to hear that you're both back safely (hopefully with all of your luggage this time) ... please send also our love to yourself and Nadine!!

Many thanks, David!!! This painting gave me an idea how I could render the light beams the next time. I think they turned out too intensive and don't fit with the background light very well. But I like the tree however. I think it was also a result of the Narnia stories we had heard ... I was so in there that I used a lot of time for working on the bark, more then usually.

I totally understand where you come from by trying to pick apart your own painting. But let me tell you first hand from an obsever's point of view that I think the beams of light actually strengthen the overall quality of the piece. The tree is wonderful as well! For me your style in watercolors seems to be continuing to grow. I like how the main figure isn't completely detailed showing the heavy beam of light is taking out most of his color - it totally adds another effect to the painting that you may not have saw or felt when you were doing it Sure there is always the next painting but don't think that the overall light is too much..it definatly is perfect - you've totally stepped on another stone with this painting!

David, thank you for your kind words! You're right, I didn't noticed this effect when painting it. I think I will go awhile away from painting sun beams ... maybe I was a bit possessed to get nearer to my own expectations . There are more challenges in watercolor waiting: clouds, water, fire ... hehe

My, thatΒ΄s really beautifull. I thinkthe light coming through the leaves is a bit to much but thatΒ΄s just a small critique. The rest is awsome. Well done! ^_^

Many thanks for your comment! I am also not really happy about how the sun rays turned out ... I was experimenting with it a lot and so I lost my background to several gesso layers on top of it. I think the lower left part of the foreground sun ray (where it falls off) gives a good idea how I should model it the next time ...
