Description All around the country side of China there are far too many people. The government posts signs everywhere telling the country side inhabitants to only have one child but most of the people who live out there are farmers and old habits of having more kids, males in particular, is a good thing. Males are important to the farmers because of Chinese customs where when they are married their wife will come live at the mans house, which in turn brings more help to the farms or whatever else. Although now things are changing a bit, while in the country side they do still prefer to a child to be male, in the big city most people don’t care much anymore besides the older people stuck in the old traditions. For most people my age (twenty something) passing on the family name, having a male child, etc. is not very important and some what irrelevant in China’s quickly adapting city life where choices are made in favor of the most efficient money conscious ways.

These two boys however, if they decide to stay in the country side will probably have old traditions forced upon them by their family, plus the simple fact that in the country side you don’t just go out and buy a house. Most families live together in multi generational homes and usually people don’t go out to live on their own. But as you can probably guess, these two boys could care less about such things right now, all they are interested is playing around and talking to the weird foreigner taking photos of them.

ps. I like the boy on the left's ultra man theme.

Yes, I found what you said to be true on the last trip to China. Usually, one would think that China still holds fast to its 'male only' thinking. But now, some even prefer to have girls which is proof of modernisation. As for the farmers, I can understand, but so long as there's no gender-choosing made legal, then it's okay I think.

It would be totally wrong to go against Nature.

to visit the country side of china must be like travelling in time, I guess. I would like to see it one day myself but I guess it will all be asphalted until that day. I still could cry about the old temples now sunken in the waters of the greatest water resevoir ever. But to see a picture like this - it really let forget the thoughts about all the "when" and "if" but leaves a "what a wonderful scene of 2 boys without worries". Nice catch. ^^
