I definitely have a lot of respect for wild animals, as well. I remember a quote someone mentioned in a movie (sadly, I don't know whose quote it was): " I have never seen a wild thing feeling sorry for itself." No, they just take it as it comes.

ya .... and it continues to impress me. Although it has been tough seeing them each day. We got quite a bit of snow in November .... then a sudden warm snap quickly followed by yet another drop into the deep freeze that covered everything in ice so the deer are REALLY having a tough time getting to any grass. Last night it dipped to -26*F / -33*C and it was tough to watch them stare at me thru the window while they stood there and shivered. I did feed them but I can't afford to give them everything they need. Luckily it is supposed to get right back to around 0*C on the weekend so that will help!

yup .... the snow hit and the temperatures dropped and they all started to show up again. It's been almost 2 years since I've seen them in the yard and as far as I can tell it's all the same group! I for sure recognize several of them :]

Wonder why they skipped a year?

because last winter was super mild and we had pretty much no snow. Thus they had lots to eat and easy access to it :]

The birds, especially the sparrows, seem oblivious to it all, so long as there is food.

true ... but do they know any different? -11*F this morning and boy are you right about the food ... the deer were soooo hungry.

I am finding a huge crowd around my feeders every morning. Not a lot beside birds, just a few squirrels and a rabbit or two. They all will eat the bird feed, especially since I started putting out hen scratch for the bigger birds. Everyone loves Ritz crackers.

they do seem to fall into a routine for sure. LOL .... I can't afford to feed this crowd on Ritz! A bag of el-cheapo apples once in a while is the only sort of treat they get :]
