I'm Superman

A poem by Peter S. Quinn

Come to my heart knock on wood
Don’t worry, be good I'm your super man

I will let you be what you want to be
Bring you through because I'm superman
Let you have wings - set you free
Fly with me with these wings if you can

Don’t pretend just come on and really fly
Everything I said - I'm going to try
Bringing in all the hope I gave
Just you wait and see and - be with me brave

There is no one other - I'm the one
I am the man with the super sign on
Giving you what real power is and test
And you will have to imagine with me the rest

Because I have the powers of kryptonite
There is no way to test such might
But just come with me and see what I can
Together we can - yes we can! Because I'm superman

All the strength that you couldn't know
Is inside and now coming out so fine!
Every power known - now superman shall show
Just watch my symbol as it glows up like sunshine

Mightier than a jet plane I’ll fly and I promise you
Everything will be to better put and straight
Promises you thought gone I shall again renew
Take away all doubt and settle each debate

I will let you be what you want to be
Bring you through because I'm superman
Let you have wings - set you free
Fly with me with these wings if you can

Don’t pretend just come on and really fly
Everything I said - I'm going to try
Bringing in all the hope I gave
Just you wait and see and - be with me brave

I am the guy who will always stand by your side
Give you opportunities and money in your pocket
Don’t you worry - let the worries away ride
I'll be your superman and fly like a rocket

There is no one other - I'm the one
I am the man with the super sign on
Giving you what real power is and test
And you will have to imagine with me the rest

Because I have the powers of kryptonite
There is no way to test such might
But just come with me and see what I can
Together we can - yes we can! Because I'm superman

Yes we can! Yes we can! Yes we can!
Because I'm superman

Obama Vs. The Fear

By Mark Morford

Everyone I know is feeling a little bipolar right now. Everyone I know is going through the most unusual of psychological and socioeconomic fits, a bit unsure what to do and how to feel and exactly which emotional flush should be the one to modulate their equilibrium on a day-to-day basis.

The conundrum is obvious and compelling and, as always, deeply enhanced -- if not wholly solved -- by vodka.

It goes something like this: Do you allow yourself, even now, to feel any sort of ongoing, relieved, merciful joy that Barack Obama actually is sitting in the Big Chair in the White House? That this elegant, articulate, Zen-like man whose integrity is rock-solid and whose ideas, while certainly not in perfect alignment with every ultra-lefty vision on the planet (clean coal? Please), are astonishingly ambitious and brave, is leading this nation during one of the worst economic times in its short and paroxysmal history?

Or do you say whatever, sorry, no time for that. Everything's plummeting and jobs are dying and (in my case, certainly) the industry you've worked for your entire career is gasping its last breath, and therefore, melancholy and dread and panic are the only truly appropriate responses, because I don't care how great the guy is, any smile that might cross my face when I see him gets immediately wiped out as soon as I ponder my 401k?

It's a bizarre choice indeed. The good news is, the Obamafied bliss is still out there, still swirling, still waiting to be supped like a fine digestif. At any given moment you can, if you so choose, pause in whatever it is you're suffering from and hear that voice and see his visage or perhaps merely hear some pundit say the words "President Obama" out loud, and you can still enjoy that delicious chill, that little jolt that says, "Oh my God, did we really do it? Is that lucid, impeccably centered man really the leader of the free world?"

Hey, it sure beats doing your taxes.

You can even take it a tiny step further. You can, as I recently did, glance up at the screen during Obama's congressional address and see not only a young, composed, African American president speaking to the populace in more thoughtful, articulate language than we've heard in a decade, but also note that he happens to be surrounded by a female Speaker of the House and a female Secretary of State and a smart, funny VP who, refreshingly, is not a sneering warmongering torture fanatic who enjoys sucking the blood from live baby sharks.

I mean, good Lord, what sort of astonishing snapshot is this? Two strong, powerful women and a deeply graceful black president? What country is this again?

(If, for some reason, you're also feeling a bit masochistic, you can take these moments to imagine how it might be if John McCain were the president right now, and Sarah Palin was right there next to him, grinning and winking like a truck-stop Barbie, and just how violently unstable and sour and doomed you would feel. Fun!)

So then, the wistful Obama swoon? Still right there. Still accessible. Still agreeably valid. This is the good news.

But oh, the dark side loometh. By Obama's own insistence that he be held accountable for it all, no one knows for sure if all of these spectacular, historic moves -- the bailouts, the massive recovery program, the jobs, housing, overhauls in health care and education and etcetera -- if any of it, will actually work.

It is, by every estimation, the biggest political and fiscal gamble in a generation, maybe five. It is dicey and dangerous and wildly progressive in scope and ambition, and you know this is true because many bitter, unloved Republicans are seething and whining and tearing into every Obama idea they can find, simply because said plans don't do enough to fellate the wealthy and worship oil companies and ignore children.

Maybe longtime pundit David Gergen said it best when he noted that Obama's agenda is more than merely a stack of dramatic, expensive proposals. It's actually more akin to FDR's New Deal rolled into Lyndon Johnson's Great Society; the grand sum of what Obama is attempting to do just so happens to be "the greatest political drama in our lifetime."

This, then, is our grand takeaway. If Obama can pull it off, if he can follow through with even half of these massive, historic overhauls, it will result in one of the most profound transformations and redefinitions of American ideals in history. And I gotta say, it's damn nice to write that sentence and not be referring to warmongering and torture and God-sanctioned homophobia. What a thing.

But of course, the transformation is also a source of profound anxiety. Is it all too much? Is Obama too ambitious? Is he overreaching? Could it all backfire and implode and could the United States collapse entirely as we're taken over by China and forced to work in cellblock sweatshops as giant shape-shifting robots rule the land? Mmm, apocalypse. It's what's for dinner.

Or maybe not. So far, all polls indicate that President Obama's potent speech hit all the right notes and set the stage for the Grand Transformation. He has widespread support even among moderate conservatives, many of whom now appear to trust a Democratic president even more than they trust their beloved banks and megacorporations. Which is a bit like devout Catholics saying hey, you know what? The pope really is an insidious relic. That Buddha guy? He might be on to something.

This seems to be the bottom line, at least for now. We have, for the first time in just about forever, an enormously ambitious, confident, risk-taking president so full of grand and even borderline radical ideas they barely fit into a single generation, much less a single speech, and we have him at a time when we need, well, someone exactly like that.

That he just so happens to be tremendously intelligent, progressive, serene as an oak tree and utterly magnetizing? I guess you just call that a bonus.

Ah, poor Obama. He's being attacked on ALL sides by both parties since (unlike Bush) he isn't giving into political bullies out to further their own power in Congress. Notice how most of his decisions have been rather neutral, not particularly Democrat, not particularly Republican.

He's sure as hell a step up from Bush, that's for sure.

But worried citizens are the most gullible species on the planet when it comes to Public Affairs. Whoever promises the most, FOR the most, will get the vote and popularity. And that's what Congress is trying to do.

But Obama has actually made some changes, unlike our recent bout of Post-Regan Presidents.

I salute this fine man.

Closed the prison section of the Guantanamo Bay naval base.
Set a definite timetable for the withdrawal of troops from Iraq instead of just waiting, seeing, and withdrawing as it goes along.
Spent aforementioned taxpayer dollars for a constructive purpose other than Iraq.

Among the first few things that cross my mind anyway.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

politician333 In reply to lazardo [2009-03-19 15:27:31 +0000 UTC]

Obama signed an executive order that will close down Gitmo in a year. Besides, closing down Gitmo will make America more vulnerable to terrorist attacks.

Obama will end "combat operations" in August 2010, but he will leave a "transitional force" of 50,000 soldiers to train the Iraqi Army and conduct counterterrorism missions. They will withdraw from Iraq in December 2011 under the Status of Forces Agreement signed by...oh wait, George W. Bush.

And lastly, he has spent more taxpayer dollars in 50 days than Bush spent in 8 years. Mostly to prop up his friends in ACORN and fund the pet projects of numerous Congressmen.

You are focusing on Obama's "foreign policy", which will basically be putting his head between his legs and apologizing for what the Bush administration did. You have no idea how much individual wealth he is going to destroy in America, or what he has planned for our veterans.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Passin In reply to politician333 [2013-11-04 01:45:20 +0000 UTC]

Gitmo Bay not only made America one step closer to tyranny, it also damaged America's world standing and made it more vulnerable to terrorism. He also set up a system that would best help veterans in the form of a half decent healthcare system (unlike the previous one which lead to MORE spending per person for LESS effect)

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

lazardo In reply to politician333 [2009-03-20 01:54:38 +0000 UTC]

You sound like they're gonna let all those Gitmo folk go free. The media frenzy surrounding high-profile considerations of release could as well prevent that, and besides which, you may be pleased to know that Obama will be retaining a limited form of extraordinary rendition.

George W. Bush may have made the mess but that doesn't mean that he didn't sometimes put people who are actually quite skilled at managing the battle in command down there. Obama receives advice from those people, being Commander-in-Chief and all, and reacts accordingly. Perhaps it isn't coincidence that his plans, then, would sometimes be in sync with Bush's.

Please give a source as to exactly where this money as going. If increasing funds for education, infrastructure and renewable energy is somehow a bad thing...

Finally, given what the Bush administration did then perhaps it's time for a little humility. The ego of a superpower can lead it astray. As for individual wealth, it's not as if the standard savings-and-checking banks are collapsing like dominoes. People are getting the hints to save more.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

politician333 In reply to lazardo [2009-03-20 02:50:30 +0000 UTC]

Now they may not let all of them free, but they are going to put them here, on American soil. And it's good you mention rendition as a tactic to keep, considering Obama is banning enhanced interrogation techniques, which have worked.

And it matters less where the money goes, but what are the long term effects. The effects are going to be high inflation and ballooning of the national debt. And the so-called "stimulus bill" is nothing but a piece of legislation designed to fund every liberal pet project out there.

Lastly, the Obama administration's foreign policy will make America less safe, where as Bush kept terrorists from attacking America after 9/11. America's enemies are already on the move. Last week, the Chinese harassed a U.S. Navy Ship. This week, Russian military commanders are considering stationing longe-range bombers in Venezuela and Cuba. Just the fact that they are considering this is discomforting. They smell weakness in the new administration and are moving swiftly.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lazardo In reply to politician333 [2009-03-21 14:47:32 +0000 UTC]

By "on American soil" I would presume you refer to local max-sec prisons. Though I would unfortunately have to add that if they do turn to terrorism, it may be that their detention at Gitmo may have galvanized their desire especially if they did not have that before. Rendition often to countries with very shady human rights records (and "secret CIA prisons") isn't exactly good for international rights goodwill.

The high inflation and ballooning debt, as I've said, are mostly to blame on what the previous administration and its allies did (e.g. deregulation allowing for unscrupulous loans to be pushed). Although I am not under the impression that said "liberal pet projects" are bad (infrastructure, alternative energy, etc.) Congress could share substantial (but not primary) blame for failing to at least put dampers on the crisis.

It may be discomforting to have rival superpowers posturing like this, but we should also consider if they're actually doing that to cover up their own weaknesses. Russia's OPEC-oil-based economy probably hasn't fared well with plunging oil prices. The same could be said about the ultra-nationalized Venezuela, among others.

Heh, to the point as always )) I personally think that Obama is great - he sure has brains and charisma, which is already a lot. But the expectations from him seem to be truly unrealistic. The world is in the middle of crises, which originated from USA. Plus he's got unfinished wars to deal with. People might think him a superman, but honestly - give the guy a break. No matter what - he would be way better then Bush and that's no small fit already.

That's some very awesome work right there. If you poke around Conservative talk radio (Though I am very liberal.) they're all announcing the end of the world. They also think Barack Obama likes to kill little babies, which is completely absurd. They're getting really, really pissed. Hispanics are the new scapegoat for the economic crisis. Hopefully, the Obama administration will help to alleviate the problems we face...

Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Mark Levin are not talking like it is the end of the world, their talking like socialism is right around the corner. And considering what the Chosen One is doing, it most likely is.

On another note, how does government takeover of the private sector and dumping 8 trillion dollars onto the next generstion in the fist year of the Chosen One's reign "alleviate" the country's problems? If anything it drastically adds to them.

Reversing Bush's policies on abortion!)...are still realistic and acknowledge the fact that he's sending more troops to Afghanistan and have a healthy fear of it...I know I do...He's inherited a big mess and it probably won't be completely cleaned up by the end of his term...Other than the war I think he's still capable of doing good for the U.S....

" Yeah because overturning the Bush policy on 'abortions' is so important during an economic crisis."

What Obama did is make it so taxpayer dollars fund agencies that perform abortions overseas. Note the words "overseas" and "taxpayer dollars". Despite what you think about abortion, how is using people's hard-earned money to fund overseas abortions a good thing? We are in economic turmoil and he does this?

Again, how is this a good thing?
