Description A quick study on several myth creatures from Iceland that are not Elves or Trolls *it's hard to find translated information* > >

So far I like the Hrosshvalur more, but it's hard to make an informed decision when there's so little to base on

The "Skeljaskrímsli" looks like a mix of pangolin and manatee, and the "Hrosshvalur" looks like a mix of seal and deinonychus, very interesting creatures.

It's amazing how interesting the lesser known myth creatures can be. Tons of fuel for new ideas

It's true, people who created these mythic creatures were very creative.

Birvan, there actually is an icelandic book about the sea monsters and a museum in iceland.
Also the translated names are
Múshveli - Mousewhale
Hrosshvalur - Horsewhale
Skeljaskrímsli - Shell Monster/Shell Beast
Skoffín - They are a crossbreed of a female cat and a arctic fox. *not vise versa, that makes a different beast all together* mythical icelandic creature.

Unless that book has an english version I'm afraid it wouldn't be very useful to me
Cool. What's the name of the museum?

Well at least the names match the creatures quite well

I have no idea if there is an English version but here is the website for the museum and they might have something there.
skrimsli.is/

I do agree, usually they are named by descriptions like a lot of places in Iceland too haha.

I would actually choose the Hrosshvalur design ^^
Its kinda weird that the creatures you've designed for Iceland doesn't have his hair...well for me XD

Birvan In reply to jhelisapoh [2014-09-12 13:55:55 +0000 UTC]

It would look a lot weirder with the hair on, trust me

Battleferrets [2014-09-11 22:10:16 +0000 UTC]

You could always try asking humon ? They seem to have studied a great deal of the mythology around that region and might be able to point you to some sources?

Birvan In reply to Battleferrets [2014-09-11 22:47:53 +0000 UTC]

I don't think I should go that far. Last time I read she often gets easily swamped with comments and notes, so by the time she replied I would probably make my mind

annathewerewolf [2014-09-11 21:07:16 +0000 UTC]

ill vote for the mushveli its small and cute, its colors seem to fit Iceland too.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Birvan In reply to annathewerewolf [2014-09-11 22:45:24 +0000 UTC]

Problem is I couldn't find any details about it outside of a (vague) description of how they look

Rodlox [2014-09-11 19:59:09 +0000 UTC]

the Muchveli and Hrosshvalur would be my favorites...but its pangolin-ish-ness help the Skeljaskrimsli win.

well-drawn; thanks for sharing  (hadn't heard of any of these before; now I'll keep my ears open)

The problem with the liimlsan.tumblr.com/post/97238… is those scales are a pain to draw

My pleasure. It's always good to hunt for the less known myths

XiaNumber14 [2014-09-11 19:42:29 +0000 UTC]

Based on design, the Hrosshvalur (because it looks so cool) or the Mushveli (because it looks so cute).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Birvan In reply to XiaNumber14 [2014-09-11 19:45:30 +0000 UTC]

Sadly I don't have much information on the Mushveli outside of being a whale-mouse looking creature > >

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

XiaNumber14 In reply to Birvan [2014-09-11 21:30:33 +0000 UTC]

That's a shame.....wait, whale/mouse? But they're exact opposites on the size scale.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Birvan In reply to XiaNumber14 [2014-09-11 22:49:13 +0000 UTC]

I have no idea how the hell they came up with that concept, but it's definitely unusual to say the least

XiaNumber14 In reply to Birvan [2014-09-12 11:42:36 +0000 UTC]

At least it's cute.

My interpretation of it at least

dinodude0091 [2014-09-11 19:27:23 +0000 UTC]

Now THESE look like some damn cool mythical animals.

The Skoffin kinda reminds me of those modern chupacabras people keep finding in Texas (y'know, the ones that may or may not be mangy coyotes), the Skeljaskrimsli looks like a semiaquatic pangolin, and the other two (Hrosshvalur being my favorite here) remind me of those "Trident-Tail" things from that one episode of "MonsterQuest."  Seriously, I could actually believe that these are real, undiscovered animals of some manner.

There are tons, tons more. It just takes a bit of digging up X3

PuffinPixel [2014-09-11 18:44:01 +0000 UTC]

whoa! Hrosshvalur is fucking cooooooool <3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Birvan In reply to PuffinPixel [2014-09-11 18:53:23 +0000 UTC]

Do you know any particular information about it? Outside of using the tail to cause waves?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PuffinPixel In reply to Birvan [2014-09-11 20:25:24 +0000 UTC]

absolutely no idea, sorry. I wish I could speak icelandic

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Birvan In reply to PuffinPixel [2014-09-11 22:50:22 +0000 UTC]

But it should me more likely for you to find something in your language than in english, no?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

PuffinPixel In reply to Birvan [2014-09-11 23:20:44 +0000 UTC]

hmmm, from what I could get, it makes a neigh sound due to being a horse/sea creature. (Which would go well with nøkken!Norway tbh) the name literally means "horse whale"
Something seems to suggest that they like to stir up the seas to bring down ships as well as crashing into them, from the little I could find. Usually this is some fisherman's tale of very rocky seas, but that's how myths are created XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Birvan In reply to PuffinPixel [2014-09-12 00:33:55 +0000 UTC]

Sounds pretty much like what I found

Yeah, but at the same time a Norway Huldrekarl taking care of a stranded Hrosshvalur!Iceland would make a lot of sense as well, because of their sibling relationship. As a Nokken it would be a lot harder because of the lack of limbs (not to mention he'd be busy struggling with his own instincts)
