he is not a dog, he is not a cat, he is not a bear and he is not a dragon, he is a motherfucking POKEMON ! deal with it. but well, some pokemons are based on animals but they are still POKEMONS, they are just based on animals, this dont mean they are animals.

Exactly.
In all honesty, when it comes to people just drawing him in their own way, I find that a completely different thing and otherwise totally acceptable.
like when I draw him for example, I tend to make him rather dog-like, simply because I just grew up seeing him as some kind of funny looking canine and because that's just how I see him best.
But that doesn't make me absolutely correct, nor does that give me the right to mindlessly search for every different representation of him and insult the artist just because he doesn't look like how I see him (like how some people on here seem to do, sadly)...NO ONE should be doing that at all because it's just plain rude, but unfortunately I see it with nearly every drawing of him, especially if he even has a hint of canine traits on him and that's just super depressing.
But If someone asks me what he REALLY is, I'm not going to say that he's a wolf, or a cheetah, a horse, or even a freakin' cow, since there really is no way to tell what exact sole animal he is based on. for all we know, he could surely be a mix of everything and we just don't know it. so that's usually why I just stick to saying 'He's just a Pokemon' when someone asks me that question.

Hahaha I started typing out about how I heard they were based off of big cats and how that makes sense, but then I finished reading your description lol.Β But I completely agree with you about how pokemon are how you see them.Β It's fun to see how the same pokemon can vary from person to person!

Entei's actually a lion dog, and Raikou's a saber toothed tiger, but same difference xD

I prefer to just leave them as the term 'Pokemon'.
because when people try to put labels on what kind of animal they think they're based off of in real life, everyone completely loses their minds with ridiculous arguments, instead of just playing the game and being happy about it.
Another thing is that people have their own ideas on what certain pokemon look like to them, and that's how it SHOULD be.
like me for example, personally I will always call them 'Legendary dogs' simply because that's just how I view them and that's what I'm comfortable with (plus, legendary cats just sounds weird to me).Β
but around others, I'll say 'Legendary beasts' because I know others may not like 'dogs'.
And if you ask me that's how it should be.
on your own, call them by how they look to you.
but around others, be respectful and just call them by their official given name to avoid stupid arguing.Β

I know.
and sorry if I sounded snappy earlier, that was definitely not my intention!
but it's still sort of the same in a way.
like Suicune for example, I've read up on his origins on what he's supposed to be (A Quilin, I think).
I accept it as fact, but that's still not how I see it personally.
Suicune will always be dog-like to me because it's what I feel most comfortable with,Β
but if asked by another person, I'll just refer back to his supposed origins of being based on a Quilin, and in turn they'll decide whether or not they want to continue seeing it as a Quilin or if they've got their own ideas on what they see it as.
it's all relatively harmless, and I'll never understand why people make such a big deal out of it.
wow, I hope that made sense...I'm horrible at explaining, sorry if it's confusing!
Japanese lore has always been very interesting, and it's one of my favorites as well.
(egyptian mythology is also awesome!) the story about the salamander sounds really cool, btw!
and i'm really intrigued to go and look that up.
it reminds me about the origin story for Magikarp and Gyarados, in which both are inspired by the chinese myth that when certain carp fish swim up the waterfall (the Dragon's Gate) they will emerge back out as dragons. funny thing as we can definitely see that that's where the inspiration came from in this scene of one of the older games:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcnchtβ¦
and no, you're fine! you're not bothering me at all!
just trying to share my point is all, again I apologize if I went overboard.

There should be something like this for eevee and it's evolutions too. People always argue over whether it's a fox or cat, sometimes rabbit traits, and I often ask why can't it be all three put together into one original creature. I think a while back I also ended up getting into an argument with someone over the poochyena being a hyena/wolf. I mean yeah it's mostly like a brown hyena, but there are some canine traits in there you can't deny exists both anatomy and behavior wise. Then the other guy mentioned something about "German Shepherd, not wolf" which I thought was kind of funny since most science books on wolves always bring up German Shepherds when they describe the looks.
To be honest though, the more I study wolf and anatomy the stranger those wolf suicunes look to me. I know Pokemon are up to interpretation, but some just look so off from the original design that they just don't look like that particular Pokemon anymore.

people have different opinions and different views of how they may see suicune since he / it is the most difficult one to distinguish with all of it's different features. and that's totally okay. some see it as a canine, others a feline while others may see it as a deer or even a horse.
honestly, i will admit that i see him more as a canine, but that's just me. more importantly i know him just as a pokemon, (A.K.A a totally 100% non existent creature not really worth thinking much into) and that's how i think everyone should view it in general.
sure, it's fun to see if they match up with real life animals, just don't get too overly hostile with your opinion.
i just don't see the point in having 12 day arguments over whether who's right or wrong about something not real to begin with.

Actually Suicune is based off the Qilin which is a Japanese mythological creature. Suicune looks nothing like a wolf. When I was younger I thought Suicune was some kind of cheetah.

xD I hate when people call them dogs, mostly because as you said, Raikou is obviously a tiger, and Entei is a lion.
The only one that even looks like a dog is Suicune. So...wouldn't the majority being cats make them...the legendary cats? xD
But most Pokemon are based on real animals, and it's fun to find out what they are. Tajiri and his crew seem to know of creatures I've never seen in my life. xD
I've heard that according to GameFreak, Suicune is based on the mythical kirin, which makes it something like a unicorn. It is part of the same myth as Entei and Raikou's origin creatures, although there is a fourth animal involved (don't remember what it was). I wonder if they will ever make that fourth creature into a Pokemon? x3 (I think it's the phoenix that is the fourth animal in that legend, but I'm not sure).
I don't like arguments between people who have no knowledge, but big mouths -- but I do like when the origin of a Pokemon is actually known, and I'm pretty sure Suicune, Entei, and Raikou's origin animals are known (although in this case, they are mythical, not real animals).

Nyaasu In reply to blueharuka [2012-01-01 01:26:31 +0000 UTC]
Oh I agree, Suicune isn't exactly the greatest example of a kirin, because of those paws. x3 And he does look doggish, so I forgive art that gives him canine anatomy (after all, it's not a kirin, it's a Pokemon, which is not real). I don't bitch about it. But I do know that people argue, I just don't get involved (except when I look up the origin of them to check). I hate arguments over fictional things, I feel like anger and frustration don't belong alongside things that make me happy. xD
The only thing that I don't like in Suicune fanart is the addition of a doggish black nose, since he doesn't have one. But if it's good art, I still comment to say so. x3 I don't point it out or anything.
Although I wonder how Suicune breathes...without nostrils... x3
I didn't think of Ho-oh...You're probably very right, since those were the set of legendaries for that game. Those three get grouped without Ho-oh, so I didn't make the connection. But now that you mention it I think you may be right!

yeah the black nose thing can be a bit distracting.
usually i draw him with nose slits like a goat or llama, cuz' well, he's gotta breathe with something!
(unless he breathes out his ass or something XD )
just like KH i wanna play the pokemon games too one day.
though if i ever get the chance i might try to avoid lavender town...
especially because of the creepy music:

hypno's version: [link]
heard it while on youtube and couldn't sleep for the rest of the week.

LOL I've heard that Hypno version, it creeps me out @_@
Although I did a test once, concerning the "Lavender Town" Creepy Pasta thing that was going around for a while (some people actually believed it!). I have the original Green version - I listened to it using headphones and an original GameBoy, while I was sleeping, and NOTHING HAPPENED. xD (The myth is based on the idea of "binaural beats", which actually exist, but the Lavender Town theme doesn't contain them, so the myth is false!) xD
It's still a creepy ass theme though. xD And unluckily for you, you have to enter Lavender town, or you can't move on in the game!
I've been playing Pokemon since Red/Blue, and I still love it.
