Description My first experiment with my new Derwent Softcolour Pencils! (I added the background in photoshop because I can't stand white space. Vegetation brushes by ~redheadstock ) Anyway, on to the information!

Race: Sallak-Na

Homeland: The tropical jungles and swamps of southern Meridia. Sallak-Na prefer a warm environment with high humidity, and do poorly in cold weather.

Physical Description: Sallak-Na are amphibious creatures most known for their striking skins, which are smooth and sleek. They come in a variety of shades and patterns, but their skin is always vibrant and multi-colored. Dull coloring is a sign of poor health! Sallak-Na walk upright when on the ground, but are more often found in the lower parts of trees, where they move using a kind of crouching brachiation. Their tails are semi-prehensile and help them to grip and balance. Both males and females have a brilliant head crest, although it is usually larger on the males. Sallak-Na are usually 4-4'5" feet tall.

History/CultureSallak-Na claim a distant relation to dragons - which, given that they share a habitat and certain physical similarities with the draconic Baruuk of Clan M'radi , may be more than just boasting. The Sallak-Na have a fairly primitive tribal culture, usually lead by a shaman or seer. They are semi-nomadic, moving within a massive home range to various homesites, which are always located near - and often partially in - water. Sick or wounded members will be cared for during the stationary periods at these homesites, but any individual unable to keep up when the tribe moves may well be left behind. Sallak-Na are fierce and do not take kindly to outsiders "invading" their territory, and may react with anything from suspicion to outright hostility.

Special Qualities As advertised by their bright coloration, Sallak-Na are extremely poisonous. This poison is created in chemical glands just under their skin near the pores, similar to our sweat glands. In times of anger, fear, or other stresses the poison automatically seeps to the surface of the skin. Sallak-Na also collect their own poison for coating the darts and arrows they use for hunting. In addition, Sallak-Na are immune to many poisons, venoms, and toxins - again, lending credence to the idea that they may have some tie to the M'radi Baruuk.

As with most of my work, the Sallak-Na are from my novel The Perfect Blade, both of which are (c) (me).

Wow I love all the colour detail you put into this, it must have taken ages! So how did you find the pencils? Fun? Horrible? Are they immune to each other's poison? And is it unique to each individual

Thanks! I admit it took a while, especially since colored pencils aren't my primary - but I really enjoyed them. They are VERY soft, I didscovered, and need a super-light touch, but they produce great color.

And yes, the are immune to each other's poison. ^_^ They're actually immune to most poisons, which is a fairly supernatural trait and sort of lends evidence to the idea they've go a bit of dragon somewhere in their background. Their poisons are each slightly different, since a portion of the poison is synthesized from their diet, so as long as they aren't eating the exact same thing they get variations.

But the softer ones are great for blending, it's just irritating when they break so easily!

Ah I see I see, so they start to produce the poison from a young age? Has anyone ever tried to harm them? I mean what would bebig enough to swallow one for the poison to be there?

It's true; the leads like to crumble. -_-

Yep - the brand-new babies are born with the most potent poison, but it gradually breaks down and is replaced with a unique poison each individual's body synthesizes for the food.

Oh, there are some very large, very frightening things that live out in the Meridian jungle... O_O

I hate it when really good colours crumble and you're left with just a stub after two uses.

Cute! I imagine them all curled up how cute! Does anyone collect the babies' potent poison? You know, to store and use if needed?

Scary, like things that could gobble them up in one bite?

I know. >_<

No, it takes a certain physical tolerance to gather it, so they don't do it to the young. Plus, they figure the little ones need all their poison, just in case...

Lovely creature and colours, though I don't think the background was that necessary- you can still see the figure's cut out and pasted in front of it. The background also creates an arid feeling instead of a tropical, humid, full of places-where-multicoloured-amphibians-live jungle. Heck, thig guy needs water fast! He does look like his original environment is bright and colourful and he can blend in it and ambush with his bow. In other words, the artist description isn't even necessary, as the design speaks of itself so well (kudos for that perfect execution), but the background seems to clash with the idea.

Aww, thank you - this was my first experiment with colored pencils in a long, looooong time, so I'm pretty happy with it. ^_^

Yeah, I've always had...issues...with backgrounds. *sigh* For some reason, white space scares me, it always makes me feel like the picture is too empty. And you're right about the colors; they're definitely a bit "dry" for his native environment. Vibrant green would suit better, but I was afraid I would loose him in that color.

Still something I'm struggling with. But at any rate, thanks for your helpful feedback and compliments! ^_^
