Description 'Not all who wander are lost...'

*May contain Dragon Age: Inquisition spoilers*

My first piece of art for my favourite game, here is my version of the Blackwall romance card, following the big reveal. I based the central idea- i.e. that burly chest being embraced by her arms- off of the game's beautiful Blackwall romance card, and used themes inspired by other ones in-game.  (Those artists are amazing!)

A quick rundown of symbolism, cuz I spent a lot of time at figuring it all out- The Griffon-feather cloak is slipping off, and the feathers disintegrating along with his lie: the lie of being a Warden. Head down-turned, his hand is letting the tatters go to the wind, and the sweep carries them off, entwined with thorns (may or may not be visible in the photograph) and darkness. The noose hangs beckoning; he has accepted his fate. He will hide no longer.
But pale arms hod him back.
"You were ready to die, but I wasn't ready to let you go..."
Forgiveness and love are stronger than any hurt the lie caused. Inquisitor Lavellan- Moragh Lavellan, my Dalish rogue- pulls him to her, to the light, to pardon. The black feathers turn into leaves and are cleansed in the sunburst of her forgiveness.

Anyhow, seriousness aside, I am rather ecstatic at how this turned out. Please use zoom to check out details....like Blackwall's greying locks....<3 And his hairy chest, and scars. And Moragh's vallaslin. :3
Anyone else adore this big guy as much as I do?

Oil on canvas, 14 x 17". critique not requested.
Art is mine. Blackwall belongs to Bioware. Moragh belongs to me.

This piece is ABSOLUTELY gorgeous. I can't properly express how fantastic it is. Colors, symbolism, anatomy, posing...it's enchanting.

It's absolutely lovely in every way. Your skill, the ideas behind it, the symbolism, the mood and atmosphere, and the way that you've managed to execute all of it. Maker, it's one of my favorite pieces ever, and I didn't even romance Blackwall (though I do love him very much). This piece not only showcases your extreme and obvious talent, but also your creative and artistically-oriented mind in a more general sense. The choices are all made for very specific reasons and with specific intents, and that all comes through in the final product.

Wow. I enjoy any piece that is provocative and creates an emotional stirring within me, but this goes far beyond most. It has a life of its own.

Thank you for sharing!!

Wow!! Thank you for such an incredible and inspiring comment!! I'm sorry I didn't see until months after you left it, but it is wonderfully encouraging all the same! This piece was one of my first paintings using a symbolic style...and I learned a LOT. Also, it was quite a blast to paint.
Im really excited about the level of appreciation you showed this piece and incredibly grateful that you took the time to share it with me! Thank you SO much! I hope to try my hand at some more paintings in this style in the near future.

Wow Sheild! You've out done yourself with this magnificent piece~
The use of light and shadow is so wonderful and give great depth to the subjects of Blackwell & Moragh.
I adore the detailed markings, strands of hair, skin & rich clothing of both of the subjects. The symbolism is especially potent - I find myself cheering Moragh on to save Blackwell from himself & death awaiting for him in the smothering darkness, the ominous noose & scattering of Blackwell's feathered/leafy robes.
This is spellbinding as well as utterly beautiful in its symbolism and aesthetic appearance.
Amazing traditional work as always~

Awwwww thank you so much!! What an amazing comment!!
This piece was kind of a turning point for me, in style and technique and, hopefully, skill. I always want to make more symbolic pieces but shy away, resorting to the more familiar. But I did it and now I'm addicted!! xD Your encouragement is fueling the fire...(like, with gasoline!) hehe, so thank you so much!!

This is beautiful. Great atmosphere, and so detailed, and I did zoom!   I'm not a crazy Blackwall fan, but this gave me the chills. You should be proud how it came out!

wow, just wow. The detail you put into it is just amazing. I love that this is done traditionally. The texture of the canvas adds to it, and great use of symbolism! Fantastic job!!

Thank you so much!! While digital painting are truly gorgeous, I love the feel the canvas' texture and the scrape of the brush...even the occasionally annoying blobbing of paint you get in traditional methods. Thank you so much for appreciating this!

Is it just me, or does this get more beautiful every time I look at it? I find it absolutely fantastic, and nigh on unbelievable, that you keep surpassing the heights of your own skill! Every next artwork you post is better than its predecessors, and I feel humbled and privileged to be able to marvel at its beauty!
You did such an incredible job imitating the Tarot card style - and in the form of an oil painting, too! I do think that modders should try to integrate this into the game as a card after Blackwall's judgement.
All the intricate details are an absolute feast to look at - I am especially in love with those ash-like feathers (ooooh, the way they flow through the hangman's noose is just mesmerizing!). And I absolutely wanna pet that lush grizzled mane! I'm lurrrrrving your take on Moragh's vallaslin, too, and the way it continues from her face all over her body! And awww, those delicate tree branches! It must have been a bit of a challange to draw the intricate lines - a jeweller's work, as we would say in my language.
Once again, thank you for your artwork, and your friendship! *hugs* I will try my best to be worthy of it!

Wow.....I really can't thank you enough for this genuine and beautiful comment!!! I am so happy and excited that you like it so much, and that you feel it fits at least similarly with the tarot cards! I've never done something with that kind of all-surrounding symbolism, and by way of actual symbols like the sunbursts and the flat leaves, rather than continuing the more realistic themes of the central figures. Every time I see those tarot cards- certain ones in particular- I wish and wish I created pieces more like that, that my artistic mind knew how to think like that. Finally I sat down and said: only one way to learn. I'm so happy I succeeded! Obviously, I've still a lot to learn as far as technique and coming up with ways of incorporating and inventing symbolism, but I am quite proud of how this turned out! So, thank you so much for appreciating every bit! It made me so happy to get this comment, and now I'm re-pumped to keep the learning experience going!

Oh my, it is so cool! It is oil painting and it has all those little repeated details like leaves and thorns and feathers...I do like the colour change in the background and all the symbolism of his 'rebirth'. You did a great work
