i don't remember exactly, but it's a flashlight of some sort for sure... most likely my bike's "halogen" headlight by CATEYE, similar to this [link]

it's not hard to do... it's "drawing" with flashlights during a long exposure photography.

No f'in way. I've seen some of your light stuff before, and it's very impressive, but this is just plain sick. I wish I felt like going on at great length right now, because I almost feel like talking about how much I love this piece for about a half an hour. Definitely worthy of a fav in my book

Amazing, amazing stuff

Mostly, I love this! The concept is just too good!

I regret your presence in the first shot. Since you're taking multiple shots on a tripod anyway, I would always take an "emtpy" shot so that you've got the raw materials to address issues like these.

The second shot, photographically, is my favorite - there's something about the looming presence of that background building that really completes it for me, and the value of the relatively greater brightness up over the hill. These make this shot an excellent center anchor for the whole triptych.

The third shot for me looked like the winner in the detail view, but then disappoint me in the full view. It's that I thought there would only be one subject, acutely alone, in the punchline, and that to me would have really concluded the story on a more definite note. As is, he looks weary (which is great) but the "message" there is harder for me to discern. To your credit, there clearly IS one, the relationship between the two of them, so it's perhaps only my own limitation that I don't entirely "get it."

The bright spots, left in the first shot, don't detract for me much at all, precisely because of their placement in the overall composition. I wouldn't sweat those - in an image with so much specific and unreal light, a little " random" light, so far from the centers of action, doesn't seem like a detriment to me, but perhaps a mild reinforcement.

And overall, I can't emphasize enough how delightfully creative this is. I've looked at your gallery thumbnails, and this one appears to be a very strong pinnacle of your stickmen work.

wow, thank you so much for viewing and taking time to write this extensive comment!

i should have thought about a reference shot, thanks for reminding me. i hardly ever take any, hopefully will remember henceforth...

i didn't think too much when composing. i just happened to have 2 stickmen that fit into that 3rd picture at the same time and used them.

thanks again!

Well done, nice shots. However, I do have some critique on this one. Please don't take it personally I'm just trying to make you a better photographer.
Here goes:
1) The light spots in the first picture on the upper left corner. No good, sorry. Actually, the entire first image isn't that good (you're sitting down there, all blurred and stuff, and are pretty much disturbing the entire stickmen-harmony). You should consider reshooting that one.
2) Mmh...second picture. Here a bit of praise: the contrasts and deep shadows are really good. The background is 'soft' in contrast with the foreground which makes it a a-ok picture. Nice.
3) One suggestion: You've been posting a helluva lot of stickmen. Not to crash your personal style here, but what about doing something else for a change? I think we've seen the whole stickmen idea by now. Nevertheless, most of them are good long exposure shots, so kudos to you on that one.

boli In reply to aap [2003-12-28 14:57:02 +0000 UTC]

thanks for your critique Adrian, it is appreciated!

1) i did notice the light spot, but couldn't help using the picture anyway, as i really liked the stickman on that particular picture (it's the one sitting on that small house). as it was raining those spots were hard to avoid, but i'll try harder to do so...

i wasn't sure about me being still somewhat visible, though, but ~raumzeit and *fritsch both seemed to like it, so...

2) thanks!

3) uhm, was it really that many? i'll probably be doing long exposure shots for quite some time in one variation or another, but have not plans for more stickmen as of now...

cheers mate!
