Disclaimer: The information below is not to be considered canon in Battlestar Galactica Lore and represents part of a "what-if" head canon scenario in my mind for an alternate universe, similar to the one created as the backstory for the "Battlestar Galactica: War of the Colonies" mod.

The 2CW Universe (Second Cylon War) is a what-if scenario where the initial surprise attack on the Colonies is mostly thwarted but not enough to prevent certain events from happening, like Laura Roslin becoming President via succession for example. The universe uses information from the series, Blood & Chrome, and Deadlock as well as several other fan works for inspiration.

Disclaimer: I am also aware that this design of ship was made by another user. I do not own this ship design. If you are the creator of this design, please message me below along with a link to the original and I will happily update with appropriate credit given.

"Ares is the god of war. I can only hope that he's pleased by this tribute to him, and that this tribute makes even the Cylons' god fear him." - Adm. Helena Cain

History:
Developed as part of Project Thermopylae, an effort to develop and deploy new Battlestars for the Colonial Fleet in the years before the outbreak of the Second Cylon War, the Ares Class Battlestar was developed alongside its sister class, the Athena Class Battlestar. Although both were commissioned by Colonial Command, the Ares Class has seen more widespread use in the Colonial Fleet. The Ares first saw action against the Cylons at the outbreak of the war, pelting the approaching Cylon Basestars with artillery fire. Three Ares Battlestars highhandedly defended Sagittaron from six Cylon Basestars. Two of the Ares were destroyed and the third seriously damaged while all six Basestars were destroyed. The damaged Ares was subsequently salvaged and restored to working condition, but the performance of the Ares in the Battle of Sagittaron more than solidified the Ares' place in the Colonial Fleet.

Information:
The Ares Class Battlestar fills the role left behind by the retirement of the Minotaur Gunships and Berserk Assault Carriers from the First Cylon War as a ship killer. Its focus on firepower is complimented by a small wing of Vipers it can deploy on a moments notice. Despite being slightly smaller than the retired Artemis Class Light Battlestar, it packs enough firepower to slightly surpass its predecessor. This, coupled with a favorable thrust-to-mass ratio and its somewhat rounded and streamlined frame, grants it a surprisingly high amount of maneuverability. The only noticeable drawback for the Ares is its somewhat lighter armor. Additionally, the Ares is, by default, not equipped with nuclear warheads since they're meant for taking out enemies with their sheer amount of firepower. The Ares are sometimes equipped with nukes but in most cases they aren't equipped with them.

In terms of Vipers, the Ares carries a smaller compliment compared to other Battlestars. Some Ares Battlestars are only supplied with half the number of vipers than usual to put more emphasis on the Ares' own combat capabilities. In these instances, the flight pods on the Ares are used to deploy Raptors and shuttles or deploy viper patrol wings. The Ares, along with its sister class, the Athena, are the smallest Battlestars equipped with outward facing Viper Launch Tubes on their flight pods.

The Ares and Athena classes are near identical in design and either can be reconfigured into the other within a month's time.
