Well, I have to say, not too many people here are asking for Bulgarian style homes. Maybe I should start a new trend?

Well why not?The style is influenced by Eastern Roman and oriental motifs, but I must say it manages to keep ALOT of what makes it unique.Alot of westerners seem to think so too, buying them houses like crazy!

[link] For example, Rila monastery is an excellent and unique architectural gem in Bulgaria. Not well known in the west, but nonetheless, with it's polychrome masonry, it's a beauty. Not easy to do a house design following this style...

Oh Rila is a gem, such a blend of medieval splender. You should look for photos of some of the interior paintings, marvelous. As for houses, people over here grew up under Turkish occupation for 500 years and that reflected alot.Hence why most houses of that time look like castles, thick high walls, massive wooden gates, two floors, stairways and more windows on the upper levels.

Yes, no problem, no annoyance. These houses are beautiful really. I would like to see detail drawings of the carpentry, rails, porch posts, etc and floor plans. Maybe they are rare and old-fashioned now?

Carpentry is something speciffic. There are schools here and craftsmen that still practice the art in ways over 200 years old. As for the houses themselves it varies. Some are old and most likely to be seen in architectural reservations or really old villages. But the style and technique are far from unused. Its not uncommon to incorporate the design in a modern construction, in fact most people who can afford it do it.

That's great to hear. It seems like many countries have programs to preserve traditional carpentry methods for buildings. Each place on the planet should have a specific look and set of traditions. We don't need every place to look like the new suburbs of Beijing.

Its good that countries preserve their national heritages but with this recession sometimes it can't even happen.

Paige met the director of personnel for St Francis yesterday. He's building something on North Main. He claimed he "stole the plans" from the internet and, with great friction, he's pushing the builder to just build it. Supposedly it has four turrets or something. Lots to think about in the facts above he he...

I love how you've used the stonework to transition between different tiers of the property surrounding the home. This is a very attractive use of elevation!

Thanks, yes, I like to blend the house with the surrounding walls, and connect the house to the land using various styling devices.

When I first saw the small drawing I was thinking mission style, which I guess evolved from a Mediterranean stle. Nice details and still doable in today market.

Built4ever In reply to MitchMitton [2013-04-04 18:39:35 +0000 UTC]
HMMM yes, related to mission style too. Mission specifically has curved, baroque-ish parapet gable walls, distinctive for the style, but has in common roof materials and shapes, liberal stucco use, etc. I haven't done much mission style. Maybe I should do one.

Oh, nice. It reminds me a bit of Frank Lloyd Wright's early work, but more compact as would be good in the mountains.

HMMM interesting observation, FLW used deep overhangs, hipped roofs, and similar stonework. Not exactly prairie style but not too far off either...

Yes, that house was beginning of horizontal emphasis in opposition to prevailing Victorian norms. It's wider proportionally than mine and symmetrical, but similarities are obvious eh?
