This took me back to engineering drafting classes during undergrad.

Yes, I used drafting board for straight lines, center lines, etc...

Yeah, I know. I'm learning mechanical drafting, and I'm pretty good, and I was awesome at architectural, but....
Long story. XD I like your designs.

But I suck at dimensioning sometimes.
It's a pain when i realize that I dimensioned something twice. Makes me feel dumb.

More like, I dimensioned the same feature in the top and right side view. (Mechanical drafting error)

Cool! I like a lot of styles, they bring wonderful elements and inspiration.
And I am watching you because you have awesome talent and skill. I wish I could draw architectural type designs! (I always veer off to more stylized...surrealistic/imaginitive things.)

Don't worry, I sometimes envy people who are more imaginative, surreal, expressionistic, etc. I'm just too ...REALISTIC.

how do these work as far as code is concerned? do they space out such that there is no gap bigger then 4"? Also if I wanted to stretch them due to IBC (international building code) requirements that rails should be no less the 42" would they stretch easily?

Built4ever In reply to Chicks82 [2012-10-25 00:44:18 +0000 UTC]
Excellent questions, we discussed the 4 inch ball test and how to space them properly when we actually executed the one. You can mash them together just to the right point where a ball won't go. You say stretch? Like just stretch each post? Might be okay, easy to do with software, just watch the top and bottom rails I suppose. Which IBC requirement is for a 42 inch rail system?

We are using 2009 here in CA and I know its ins some earlier versions and its for sure in later versions. Min height is 42 and the 4" ball test is for any gaps below 34 and 8" ball test for anything between 34-46 i believe it is. And of course 6" ball for the triangle that is made on and open stair well where the bottom of the rail and the tread and riser meet.

You mean all rails are 42 inches now???

Chicks82 In reply to Built4ever [2012-10-26 03:09:49 +0000 UTC]
All protective rails are min 42. Hand Railes are 34-38.

When do you use a "protective" rail over a "hand" rail?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Chicks82 In reply to Built4ever [2012-10-26 16:14:33 +0000 UTC]
Hand rail is that which is used for a persons stability while walking up stairs. A protective rail is everything else, like decks, lofts, ect.

Built4ever In reply to Chicks82 [2012-10-26 17:02:25 +0000 UTC]
Okay, gotcha, so that's interesting because it means a deck here would need a 42 inch rail, but that's not what we do...

Does your code follow IBC? Or UBC?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Built4ever In reply to Chicks82 [2012-10-26 23:06:33 +0000 UTC]
Believe it is IBC but actually, I very rarely check with county about anything codewise, and things have changed since I have. Also, I've done stuff in two states nearby, GA and NC, both different. Asheville, NC area has a lot of tight restrictions like house height in sloped areas and more that we don't have here. Generally, SC is a super low gov't interference near free-for-all, low tax, but you get what you pay for place...

I would check with the county it may or not be IBC.

I did not expect to see Balustrades here on DA, or see anyone that knows what a balustrade is. In my line of work I make these things all the time, but made of cast stone.
I love the sketch style you put on this, it makes it look like it was done old school, before AutoCAD. And from the looks of it, I would say you know what you are doing in the line of drafting. Though I am sure it is just because of an example of the designs you have, but balustrades are at max 2" to 3" apart, at least for residential areas.
As for the designs. Many of the Balustrades are rather classic, most I seen alot of. Like numbers 4 and 6. But I think I like #7 the most, with a twist LOL. The base designs are conventional and good detail. The railings, they do match your base, but in my time I see that rails do not match the base that much. Normally they are more rounded, but is good you got a peak there, so it looks like you know what you are doing. I still like them, I just normally see rails with a bullnose. Anyway great work on them.

Good, these were the first I ever drew, a few years ago, one of them was produced by the hundreds for an expensive lake house. They are all original designs of course. I drew them in very small scale on a drafting board, but the curved parts are really all hand-drawn, no other way to do it. Autocad is terrible for curves because it segments them. My compass draws a perfect circle every time! I just discussed below the spacing with another guy. Our code requires that you can't put a 4 inch ball between the posts. The spacing on the drawing is not for alignment purposes of course. What is your line of work exactly?
