Description So last week I transferred into a new art class called Commercial Art. Since I entered the class about 4 weeks into the semester, I'm a bit behind so I've been working on homework every day to try and catch up (which is why I've been MIA)

This is one of the assignments I owed, which was a portrait of a pair of shoes, and practicing "open form" drawing.

The professor was telling me that the work that I've been doing in my former drawing class have all been "closed form", basically meaning that I close off all lines and add details to the entire drawing. The drawing looks realistic, but the paper is left looking like well... paper. It also limits my creativity.

He told me that in his class, he wanted me to learn to practice focusing on certain parts of the subject and letting the rest of the sort of "fade out" into the paper. He said that this technique allows others to see what I personally found interesting about the subject. I thought was a really cool concept. Also, this way I'm using negative space as well.

This was a lot harder to do than I thought o__o I kept finding myself drawing everything out and worrying about values. It didn't look right to me for a while but once I took a break and came back to look at it, I could actually kinda see what he was talking about.

I'm enjoying the class a lot.
This week we're practicing perspective by drawing boxes and stuff. I'm kind of shocked at how little I know about perspective ><

Lots and lots of work ahead!

I like how you did this! Yes, commercial art is different in that it's more...well, artistic. That's why the drawing classes are skill classes, not art classes. Although, you did use the focusing principle with the radish drawing, where the leaves are purposefully faded out. I'm glad that you are being encouraged to practice your creativity.
In this picture, you balanced out the focal points very nicely!
