Description This is dedicated to a fearful pirate called Sheridan, otherwise known as ~snarff Let's just say that she really got into the spirit of 'Talk like a pirate day'

This started out as a really quick sketch of a woman done in blue ink and acrylic paint. It has been greatly transformed in photoshop.

"Avast, me hearties!" Sorry, but I had to start out with standard pirate fare in celebration of "TLAPD..."

Very nice, Carole! Uncomplicated, without being simplistic. Her expression makes me wonder what she is thinking. The dagger behind her back lets me know, whatever it is, agreement is in order.

What I really like about the piece are the blue undertones. I think this gives it a vibrancy and helps to create space on the 2-D surface. Those clouds are so cool, and, of course, the way you render hair:

By this time, I've developed a love/hate relationship with my Photoshop (I love to use it, but hate the results I'm currently getting, lol).

Keep up the fine work!!

Thank you, Bob. I'm like you in that I have a love/hate thing going with trying to paint digitally; I want to use it on my terms rather than use formulaic ways for painting eyes, lips, etc., and then I wonder why it takes me so long and the results don't look right. I have a bit of a resistance to following tutorials, so I have yet to discover what some tools do.

I see a girl waiting for her sailor man to come back into port.... heh-heh.
She is beautiful, and the highlights in her hair is just awesome. The copper highlights especially are fantastic. The blouse is perfect. Outstanding job, love!

Thank you. I was going to make it more ship-like, but laziness and a stomach bug set in. I enjoyed doing the hair, I didn't smooth it up as I would normally do as I liked all the colours to be seen still.

pastseeker In reply to CaroleHumphreys [2005-09-23 02:03:30 +0000 UTC]

Sorry about the bug. Been fighting off one myself this past week. Hope you feel better soon.
The hair is awesome, just as it is. I would not change a thing, honest. I think it is the best hair I have seen to date, truly. It is fantastic! The whole thing is fantastic. Looked back and had more time to really view it like I wanted to, and saw the colors in the skirt that I had not noticed before. I think you just get better and better, each day. So want to be like you some day, but I have so far to go. Heh-heh, wait until you get a load of my latest drawings, hehehehe. If they don't make you burst into laughter, I don't know what will. But I know you will be kind and give me a gold star for effect! and I can't wait!

CaroleHumphreys In reply to pastseeker [2005-09-23 08:01:07 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much You've earned lots of gold stars. Art is a funny thing in that one piece of art is not better than another as such, it's very subjective and if our work was put side by side, a lot of people would say that your's speaks to them more. There are so many artists that I admire and want to emulate

pastseeker In reply to CaroleHumphreys [2005-09-23 08:08:20 +0000 UTC]

You are so kind! I doubt anyone would think my drawing is any where near the level that yours is, but I love you for saying so.
I stuck kitkat in my scraps but I am still trying. I have to say it is your work and my daughter's inspired me to try and I have never had the desire to draw before. It is a good thing. I may never be good, but I will enjoy myself and give my hands something to do while watching the tube at night.
If nothing else, we will get a good laugh at what I produce and that in and of itself is worth it, I think.

Here's a link to a drawing my boyfriend recently did [link] When he opened his DA account, he was first to admit that he couldn't take photos or draw, but he keeps trying, and what do you know, he's getting to be a pretty good photographer and his drawing skills have come a long way. He acquires watchers like flies to a honeypot because he's having fun. When we first got together he had no interest in art and now he's collecting prints and developing his own tastes. Some of his work just cracks me up as it's adorable and infantile, but I'm proud of people like you and him for trying and being willing to have a go - they are all little masterpieces and major accomplishments
