Description -English-
Remember kids: Thylacines/Tasmanian tigers are NOT wolves/dogs/mutant otters, so please START USING ACTUAL THYLACINES PHOTOS AS REFERENCES KTHXBAI.
First of all I do like wolves but I'm getting sick of seeing some characters so called "thylacines" that just look wolves with stripes on their back (especially anthro characters), I mean a thylacine have big roung ears, a long muzzle and a really thin and long tail, and these people make characters with big "pointy" ears, short muzzle and EXTREMILY FLUFFY TAILS WAAT. Or in some cases a reeeeaaally thick tail and long tail, it almost looks like from an otter!
The reason I did this picture is when I was working on my comic "Say what?" I was drawing my thylacine character, and decided to search on dA/fA thylacines and see how people did their versions, oh boooooooooooy, its like some people don't care how an actual thylacine is (or was) they just see it is a creature that resembles a dog, but ignore all of its non-dog features.
I don't wanna be mean to anyone who might have done this but PLEASE try to use references, try to make a thylacine look like a thylacine! I did so many study sketches with photos of thylacines before I finished my character design, so I would be sure I got all of their important features on her.
But aside this little rant I did, I loved this drawing XD I used both photo references for the thylacine and the wolf so I'd make sure I wouldn't screw up on the anatomy.
The drawing itself was really fun to make <3 Hope you guys can enjoy it!

-Portugues-

Can understand that when you are little, but not when you are an adult and can use google lmao
Also the Tasmanian wolf name may also not help with that

I actually haven't really seen much Thylacine art, either way. I still really appreciate when people point out inaccuracies like this, that people make all the time.

Carolzilla In reply to Khandle [2018-07-16 16:05:17 +0000 UTC]

Theres quite a bit if you look at the right places and people who are starting to use thylacines as their own characters are making/commissioning more drawings of them
unfortunately sometimes its the ones with lots of inaccuracies :' )))

Thanks for saying this!
Yeah, I saw all the "generic wolf" with yellow hairs who just pretend to be Thylacines, and I think that we aren't remembering the Tasmanian Tiger if we can't even get his look right.

And great work on this too! Your style is fantastic and cartoony as well!

Carolzilla In reply to Jioseph-superfan63 [2017-10-24 00:55:31 +0000 UTC]

No problem /o/
Oh I've seen many different styles, even one that looked like a black wolf with red stripes that was a 'thylacine' xD

The weird thing is that we have actual photos/videos of thylacines/tasmanian tigers, so its not like we have no completele idea on what they look like xP
guess is people just being lazy and going the easy way to design a character

But thank you! <3 glad you liked my style too c:

👍: 1 ⏩: 1

Jioseph-superfan63 In reply to Carolzilla [2017-10-26 21:22:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, these peoples need to know that a generic blad fox with black pois isn't a thylacines

Another thing is that there are evidence of the still existence of the Thylacines with photos that I don't know how but are more blurred than those of the 30's!

Aw, no prob! Your style is cartoony and great! If I can ask, what program do you use?

And for most of my drawings I use PaintoolSAI, but for some effects and editing (also text) I use Photoshop

bless this
i have seen so many inaccurate thylacines and it makes me want to jump off of a cliff.
it's kind of sad to see an animal that only went extinct 80 years ago getting reconstructed inaccurately already and to make it worse- we even have photographs and videos of the animal itself yet people don't use those for reference.

how i feel about people who reconstruct a marsupial as a canid:

Carolzilla In reply to Monstatronnn [2016-06-03 14:10:47 +0000 UTC]

Thanks haha

I know exactly how you feel, I mean, there is really no excuse in this case to make Thylacines completely wrong since THERE IS CLEARLY VIDEOS AND PHOTOS OF THEM
And it's not like they are bad quality either, you can see just fine how they look AUUUGH

My guess is that most artists (especiallyfurrykind) just take a quick glance at them and goes "Ah its just like a dog with stripes!"
BUT THEN AGAIN people still mess up the anatomy and design from modern day animals, even common ones
There's so many artists who make the mistake of doing every single animal with 'dog face'

👍: 1 ⏩: 1

Monstatronnn In reply to Carolzilla [2016-06-03 14:51:36 +0000 UTC]

anytime! and same here! i respect their art and the time that they put into creating the piece, but if you want to make unique and quality art, i suggest doing some research on the animal you're drawing instead of glancing at a reference some dude sent you when drawingg. i feel like some people just wolf-o-fy the thylacine because it looks weird as a marsupial, kind of like how many paleoartists lizard-o-fy dinosaurs because feathered ones look stupid and look too bird-lik.

if you want real art, whether it be a simple headshot or not, put some time and effort into it and get an understanding of the animal.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Carolzilla In reply to Monstatronnn [2016-06-03 16:04:52 +0000 UTC]

There are some amazing artists who end up making the same issue >>

With dinosaurs its kinda a complicated thing for me because I grew up loving the JP style, but if I were to become a paleoartist I would definetily try to work with the right information of what a certain dinosaur looked like

The whole 'wolf-o-fy' thing still bothers me more because there is real life photos and videos of animals that people could easily use as a reference
But NAH I'm just gonna do every single animal in the same drawing style! Doesn't matter if I end up making a deer looking like a dog!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Monstatronnn In reply to Carolzilla [2016-06-03 16:53:08 +0000 UTC]

yeah same here!
i love the jurassic park styled dinos but overall i prefer scientific accuracy, being a paleoartist myself; but thats besides the point.

another problem with a majority of animal artists; they make every stinkin' animal they draw look like a wolf!
is it really that difficult for artists to study an animal and at least TRY to make an accurate depiction? apparently.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Carolzilla In reply to Monstatronnn [2016-06-03 17:29:52 +0000 UTC]

It's funny that even with drawing wolves they can mess up the anatomy xDD

But I think it's just a general thing with most artists (especially young and/or who draw just for fun)
Because it's 'easier' to draw characters in certain style rather than study what you are gonna draw and change the style around it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Monstatronnn In reply to Carolzilla [2016-06-03 17:43:40 +0000 UTC]

yeah, it takes practice. wolves are actually very diffucult animals to draw if you think about it enough.

i agree, a lot of artists take the easy route and stick to drawing what they're most comfortable with but i think they should really widen their variety, y'know? it's what makes an artist great!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Carolzilla In reply to Monstatronnn [2016-06-03 20:07:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah but unfortunately some people, even some I know, don't want to do anything different from what they do.

They complain about it if someone says they should have more variety and only want to do what they like :V

A thylacine is kind of like a kangaroo in wolf's skin

Carolzilla In reply to AdkinsOlivia18 [2015-05-29 16:44:13 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm nope

Thylacines are marsupials like kangaroos but they remind me more of Possums rather then roos, but with a much more canine appearence and ~stripes~

Agreed! I live in australia.

It does have some dog features but it's almost a completely new animal, their isn't anything else like it. It's a shame they got wiped out so long ago, I would have loved to see one.

entiegon In reply to Bloodwolf-Xx [2014-07-31 14:28:17 +0000 UTC]

I definitely agree. Apparently they're more cat like than dog like. Either way, they are still one of my top favourite animals to have ever walked the planet... even if Tasmanian farmers had to put the sheep stealing blame on these wonderful animals. For all we know, Aussies back then may have had dogs hunting their livestock instead of these guys.

Indeed its funny how evolution works. They do have some parts similar to a dog but there is so much more that is different and some people don't bother to look at that.

Yeah I would love to see a live one :c
