So yeah, on the SS Anne, one of the Gentlemen has a Voltorb. At level 22. With Selfdestruct.
And it got a critical hit.
On Travis.
AND HE SURVIVED WITH 3 HP.
So yeah, he gets a bro badge, which will be represented in-comic with a scarf (that he'll get in the next part, don't worry)
I think Alex in the last three panels pretty accurately portrays how I was feeling when it happened. Oh god it was terrifying watching him drop from full health to almost 0. *shudders*
I feel like the third panel could have come out better, and the Gentleman in the first panel looks so stiff. But the last two panels are pretty perfect.
Just get me off of this stupid boat now, please! (just kidding; in-game I'm already at Fuchsia!)

Yeah, considering that Dig is 100 power in Gen I, I wouldn't be surprised if Self Destruct is stronger, too.
I'm just glad that, apparently, Voltorb's attack stat isn't that spectacular, or Travis would have been a goner.

ok I just read the bulbapedia entry... Self Destruct halves the target's defense as basically doubling the base power to 260. but it is not as bad as gen 2-4 where the base power is 200 while still halving the target's defense (so 400)

The Nidos are great. I've used Nidoqueen twice. And although this is my first time using a Nidorino/Nidoking, he's awesome so far

Travis survives to evolve into Nidoking! Wow though, you must have had horse shoes in both pockets while playing that. Surviving self destruct almost never happens, unless you have a rock type. Still it's great that Travis survived, and will continue to fight another day. I was terrified, since that Voltorb was only one level lower than Travis AND scored the crit, I thought for sure Travis was a goner. I'm glad he wasn't though. That was definitely quite the stroke of luck.
Hearing damage is a great idea. I know at the very least, he's gonna have some scars, and is probably going to be a little blackened for a while. Pokemon centers can only do so much, after all.

I would have been terrified as well. Self destruct is usually a death sentence.
Well tinnitus is caused through loud noise like gunshots, or explosions. So it depends on how sever you want the damage to be. Since Travis was right in the blast, and the Nido lines are known for their exceptional hearing, Travis could in all likelihood be completely deaf. Their hearing is way more sensitive than any humans, so I think you're going to have to figure out how to communicate with Travis in the comic, if he can't hear anymore.

It's unbelievably lucky. I thought for sure I was gonna lose Travis (which would have been kinda bad; he's named after one of my friends!)
Needless to say, I definitely appreciate Travis the Nidorino so much more now.

I mean, it's not that anyone has a reason to doubt my honesty, but it's still good to know that I have the picture of it happening, so people won't be like "Wait did you totally revive him after"

Watching the HP drop from full to almost 0 is the worst.
The feeling of pride and relief when the HP stops at any number below 5 is just...such a good bad feeling.

It was terrifying. But at least this way, with this and with Benji, I can build up to any potential death so that it won't hit Alex quite as hard as if Travis had died here. That is, instead of being like, a ten on the OMG scale, it can be a more somber event, with less shouting and more heartbreaking "hey...you're okay...right?"
Not that I have to worry about that haha, but just in case something terrible happens in the future.
